Hobnobbing with Jon Smedley from Maths of the Day

So, what do Maths of the Day do?

Maths of the Day is an online resource that provides teachers with lesson plans and resources on how to deliver the primary school maths curriculum through physical activity!

The site is mapped to the maths curriculum and has 1500+ lesson plans and 250+ ‘active maths’ homework activities

What’s behind the business idea?

The aim is to help raise children’s achievement and improve attitudes to maths through fun, exciting and engaging active sessions.

As an ex PE Advisor and Deputy Headteacher I know the importance and power of physical activity – and can use this to really develop confidence, self-esteem and belief – and develop a real love of learning

It is also imperative that we get children moving more and meeting the Governments recommendation that all children take part in at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day (schools are responsible for 30 minutes of this). Active lessons in school is a great way to achieve this!

Was it hard becoming a business owner?

It was a big decision. I was a deputy headteacher of a primary school. I am a husband and father of two – and like most people have a mortgage to pay.

However, I am very passionate about the work we do and knew that I had to ‘give it a go’

I set up the business with my friend and fellow Director William Griffith who is an experienced Business man. Surrounding yourself with the right team is key and has certainly been the basis for our early success

How did you recruit your employees?

We have recruited in various ways – from contacting key people we know within the Education sector, to being introduced to people along our journey which has then led to some joint ventures and projects.    We have also recruited via a recruitment agency.

Was there a breakthrough moment?

We began trading in March 2015. I resigned from my Deputy Head post in July 2015. This was the defining moment as it allowed me to concentrate on the business full time – and give it the time it needed

How is the company doing?

We have experienced great growth over the past 2 years and are now working with over 800 schools across the UK. We are making a real difference to thousands of children taking part in MOTD each week. We have received great feedback and praise from Ofsted, many schools, headteachers, teachers and children – and are delighted to be making a difference to the lives of young people

We have just won two awards, both for ‘Business Start Up’ from the Cheshire Business Awards and Chamber of Commerce awards. We were delighted to win both and have the recognition for our product and positive business growth

Do you have any regrets?

None whatsoever.

What makes you stand out from your competitors?

Our tutors are all experts within their field and work nationally and internationally – delivering speeches and research on the importance of an active school day.

We are solving a real-life problem and making a real impact on to the lives of children and the next generation

Our product is very innovative and creative and is well received by teachers as it saves them time and provides them with a ‘solution’

What is your definition of a positive customer experience?

A school using MOTD every week across their school. Happy teachers, happy children – all enjoying the subject of maths, learning key concepts, whilst at the same time being physically active. This is what we strive for.

If you could help a business now with a single piece of advice, what would it be?

Make your product great, have a clear plan, surround yourself with a good team – and go for it!

Finally, Jon what is your favourite biscuit?!

There is only one answer to this question – a Jammy Dodger!
