Hobnobbing with Alan Bell from Stage Studios

We hobnob with Alan Bell from Stage Studios about why he is so passionate about creating the right studio atmosphere for artists!

So, what does Stage Studios do?

We are primarily a music rehearsal studio facility. We have 5 acoustically treated studios with drums, guitar and bass amplifiers as well as a PA system with microphones giving bands or artists a dedicated private space to practise their craft. We will also be offering recording services soon as well as a couple of other ideas that would be beneficial for anyone using our facility.

How did the idea for the business come about?

I have always wanted to run a rehearsal studio facility so the idea has always been there it was just a case of finding the right place in the right location. In September 2015, I heard about the studio being vacant as it was previously Apex Rehearsal Studios prior to us taking it on.  So after a few discussions with my step Father and business partner John, as well as my wife, kids and everyone I hold dear we all thought it was a good idea.

When was the company first established?

We are very new and we opened our doors early January this year, however, we started renovating and tidying the facility back in October 2015.

How is the business doing?

We started off slowly in January and I was very nervous waiting for our first customer but it wasn’t long before the telephone rang with our first booking. During February, we had more people show interest who started using the studios. The thing I am over the moon about is, not only have we received good reviews on Facebook and Google but everyone who has used our services has returned and used us again!

Since the company began, what has been the biggest challenge?

The main challenge is getting people to know about us, then getting them to use our facilities, some of our customers have used us because we are very local to them however, we have had a couple of customers come because of the way the I have created a space I would want to rehearse and feel comfortable in and believe me I am a typical musician and I am quite OCD when it comes to studios!

What makes you stand out from your competitors?

I believe before you can present anything to someone you need a solid base to work from. For any space to work with in terms of audio you need to ensure that space you are working in conforms to the task at hand. This is why we spent the months before opening, fine tuning each studio to get the starting sound vital for any band or artist that would enter. If you’re going somewhere to practice/rehearse you need to make sure you hear exactly how you sound. Secondly, you need somewhere to feel comfortable and a space that feels like a proper music facility and somewhere that you can feel creative. Thirdly you want somewhere with quality professional equipment that is priced correctly. Fourthly my team and I have been within the music industry for a long time and we are always happy to help whoever enters our facility and share our expertise and knowledge if and when it is requested.

What’s been your best business decision?

Well, I believe that still remains to be seen as we are very young, however, the points I have mentioned in the previous question I think are very relevant.

What is next for Stage Studios?

Well as I have mentioned it is early days, however, the next plan is to turn Studio 5 into a recording studio. However should any of our clientele request it I would love to be able to offer them the facilities to record their sessions as listening to a session can be very enlightening on reflection.

If you could help one business now with a single piece of advice, what would it be?

Know your product, set a goal and aim towards it and most of all, enjoy what you do!

Finally, Alan, what is your favourite biscuit?
