If you are looking for a great deal on your business electricity or gas firstly you will need to know who your current energy supplier is. If you are unsure, there are a few quick ways you can find out who is supplying your gas or electricity.
Who is my business energy supplier?
There are several ways to find out who supplies your business energy, depending on how long you have been in the property and whether you are looking to find your electricity supplier or gas supplier.
If you have recently moved into the premises, the quickest way to find out who the suppliers are, is to ask the previous occupier or landlord. The suppliers may already be aware that the previous occupier has moved, so you may receive a letter providing you with the details you require shortly after moving in.
How to find your energy supplier?
If you have already been occupying the premises for a while and are still unsure who supplies your energy, you will need to contact the local distribution companies.
The first step to finding out who supplies your business gas is to find your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN). This is a unique code which is provided to your property and will identify the gas supply. Once you have the MPRN you can call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 6081524 or use the Find My Supplier service. You will also need to provide the postcode of your premises and the building name or number.
To find out who your electricity supplier is, you will need to call your regional electricity distributor. The UK is broken into several regions, with each allocated its own telephone number, as follows:
- North East England & Yorkshire: 0800 01113332
- North West England: 0800 1954141
- Eastern England, South East England and London: 0800 0294285
- Central Southern England: 0345 0262554
- South Wales & South West England: 0800 0963080
- North Wales, North Shropshire, Cheshire & Merseyside: 0330 1010300
- East & West Midlands: 0800 0963080
- South & Central Scotland: 0300 1010300
- North Scotland: 0345 0262554
How to find which energy plan you are signed up to
Once you find out who supplies your energy, you will then be able to find out which plans you are signed up to. You will need to contact your gas and electricity suppliers directly, alternatively the details of your plan should be on one of your bills.
You may find that your business has been automatically placed on one of the most expensive tariffs, which are often the gas and electricity companies default plans. It may be possible to arrange cheaper utilities, simply by providing your usage details and switching to a more suitable plan.
Although your current supplier may offer competitive energy prices, there are a variety of suppliers available who are also competing for your custom.
