So, what does Moonshine Drinks do?
Moonshine Drinks is a simple way to make beer and wine at home without lots of complex process or equipment. Just add water and yeast to the brew bag and wait for it to turn into beer or wine.
What’s behind the business idea?
The idea behind the business was to reinvent the perceptions of wine and beer that was made at home. We wanted to create a way to create good quality drinks simply and efficiently.
Was there a breakthrough moment?
There was a breakthrough moment – when we started to sell our beer and wine kits on the high street, and discovered a new market for home made wine and beer.
How is the company doing?
We have been operating for 4 years now in the UK and are looking to build on our retail presence. To do this we have started a crowdfunding operation to allow us to invest in the next generation of drinks from Moonshine. We are doing OK but there is always the potential to do more! Over the next 12 months we will be focussed on developing our online offering and researching the market to understand what the next phase of drinks will look like – for example we are currently testing wheat beers, alcoholic ginger beer and ciders.
Do you have any regrets?
What makes you stand out from your competitors?
Our competitors are in two sectors – in the home brew sector we have a pretty unique product and so we stand out by delivering a simple and effective home brew system. A consumer doesn’t have to have any specialist skills or equipment to create their own ‘craft beer’ or wine at home. In the drink at home market we are competing with some discount brands on price, but for the equivalent of £1 per pint of quality beer we feel that our offering is robust.
What is your definition of a positive customer experience?
A positive customer experience is one where the consumer purchases a Moonshine Drinks kit (or receives one as a gift) and enjoys the process of making the drink, feels that it is a simple process and most importantly enjoys the end product. We are keen to listen to feedback from customers and let this define the levels of service we provide, and to inform our new product development. This is one of the reasons we have built a customer panel to gather feedback from our most important asset – our customers. A happy customer feels they have got value for money and comes back for more.
You’re currently reaching out for investors, what do you plan to do when you have raised this funding?
When we raise our funding we will look to increasing the range of products available and develop a couple of new lines. The money will be used for R&D and production of this new stock. In parallel with this we are looking to evolve the Moonshine Drinks brand in line with feedback from our customers. We will drive Moonshine to be a much more well-know brand.
What advice would you give yourself now if you were starting a business?
Spend more on getting the brand right and listen to who is buying your product.
