How to survive working from home

If you are working remotely for the first time, you may be struggling to find ways to stay efficient and motivated. 1. Get dressed for work

Although it may seem appealing at first to be able to work from home in your pyjamas, it can actually have a negative psychological impact. Instead, wake up as usual and get ready for your day in your usual work of attire. For example, if you would usually wear formal business clothes, continuing this while working from home can put you in the right frame of mind for work. It is also important to change out of your work clothes at the end of your working day, as this helps you brain switch off and relax.

2. Stick to your usual routine

If you usually have set working hours, shifts and days of work, it is important to stick as closely to these as possible when working from home. This will help you follow your usual routine, in terms of waking up, mealtimes and fitting hobbies around your day. Many people are anxious about working efficiently from home, so will over communicate to ensure co-workers know what they are working on. While this is important, it is also important not to overcompensate as this could distract you from the actual task in hand. Once the day is over, help your mind switch off by turning off your computer and tidying the workspace.

3. Take a walk

If you are not currently self-isolating, the government have agreed that we are able to take one walk a day for exercise. If you are able to try to get outside and take a walk during your break, the fresh air will decrease your stress levels and help you focus. If you are used to commuting to work you are usually forced to leave the house each day, although you may not enjoy the commute itself. Without the need to travel to a place of work, it can be easy to forget to go outside.

4. Use the phone

Working from home can feel isolating, especially if you usually integrate with colleagues regularly. Instead of relying solely on emails or instant messaging, use the phone to talk to people wherever possible. In many cases a phone conversation can be much quicker and more effective than a long chain of emails. It also helps maintain social connections with others in the workplace, so when you do get back to the office it will be easier to pick up where you left off.

5. Build in breaks

It is important to take breaks during your working day, in a similar way to being in the workplace. It may be beneficial to take many short breaks, to ensure you are moving regularly and taking screen breaks. Working for long periods of time without a break will actually result in a fall in productivity levels and motivation.

6. Minimise distractions

When you are at home there are lots of distractions, including people, washing, cooking, tidying, social media and the TV. It can be easy to get distracted and a few minutes can quickly turn into half an hour. To help you focus, try breaking your day into multiple tasks which you can really focus on. As each task begins, try to block out distractions and commit to completing the job.
