This guide pulls the latest court register data, gives you the eligibility rules lenders actually publish, and checks which accounts and cards are still taking applications. When we speak to business owners with a CCJ, we find that most of the damage depends on two things: how quickly you pay, and whether the judgment is against you or your company.

By the end, you’ll know what a CCJ means for your banking, borrowing and personal credit, which providers are realistic for your situation, and the order to do things in.

TLDR: What You Need to Know

What Is a CCJ and What Does It Mean?

A CCJ in England and Wales is a judgment a county court issues when a creditor has taken court action over an unpaid debt. It isn’t a fine or a criminal record. It’s a formal, public confirmation that the court has ordered you to pay.

Once the court grants a judgment, it sends the details to the Registry Trust, which keeps the public Register, and those judgments are passed on to the credit reference agencies for their files. That’s the step that causes the knock-on effects for banking and borrowing.

The register entry records the name and address the judgment is against, the court, the case number, the date, the amount, and a satisfaction date if it has been paid.

How Long Does a CCJ Stay on Your Record?

A judgment stays on the public Register for six years unless it is cancelled, paid within one calendar month, or set aside by the court. What you do in the first month matters more than anything else.

What you do

What happens to the CCJ

Effect on credit files

Pay in full within one calendar month

Removed

Removed from credit files

Pay in full after one month

Marked “satisfied”

Stays for 6 years, but shows as paid

Get it set aside by the court

Removed

Removed from credit files

Pay in instalments or don’t pay

Stays “unsatisfied”

Stays for 6 years as unpaid, with enforcement still possible

If you pay within the month, either you or the claimant can send proof of payment to the court, and once the court tells Registry Trust, the judgment is removed, and the credit reference agencies are told to remove it too.

Does This Apply in Scotland and Northern Ireland?

The rules above cover England and Wales, where most judgments are made. England and Wales accounted for 97.8% of all new judgments registered in Q2 2026.

Scotland uses a different court system (judgments are called decrees), and Northern Ireland has its own Enforcement of Judgments Office. Registry Trust maintains registers for both, but the forms, fees and timescales differ, so check the local rules before acting.

What Does the Data Tell Us About CCJs in 2026?

We analysed Registry Trust’s latest quarterly releases to see what’s really on the register. Most guides quote headline totals. The more useful story is in the detail.

Measure

Figure

Total records on the register

5.67 million

Total value of judgments on the register

£13.5 billion

Commercial judgments on the register

668,174

Median commercial judgment on the register

£1,070

Commercial judgments under £500

New commercial judgments, Q2 2026

40,587 (down 10.1% YoY)

New consumer judgments, Q2 2026

322,076 (up 34.5% YoY)

Most Business CCJs Are for Small Amounts

The most common new commercial judgment amount in England and Wales in Q2 2026 was £257, and the five most common amounts (£257, £497, £912, £1,682 and £407) made up about a third of all new commercial judgments.

In practice, that clustering suggests a lot of business CCJs come from standardised claims: unpaid utility bills, software subscriptions, small supplier invoices and similar expenses. The result is that many CCJs cost less to clear than the damage they do to your borrowing options.

Getting a CCJ Marked as Paid is Rare

At the end of Q2 2026, 88.3% of records on the register were unsatisfied, and only 11.7% were marked satisfied. Some of those judgments are unpaid, but some will have been paid without anyone telling the court.

Registry Trust has told Parliament that the burden currently sits with defendants to notify the court when a judgment is repaid. If you’ve paid and not applied to have it marked, your file still looks like an unpaid debt. That’s a fixable problem lots of business owners don’t even know they have.

Business CCJs Are Easing

New commercial judgments in England and Wales rose 1.4% across 2025 to 167,642. In 2026, they’ve fallen back, while consumer judgments have jumped by over a third year on year. If you’re a sole trader or a director, your personal credit file matters as much as your company’s, and that side of the register is growing.

1 in 5 Commercial Judgments Hits an Unincorporated Business

Of all commercial judgments on the register, 81.2% are against corporate businesses and 18.8% are against non-corporate ones. Non-corporate businesses include sole traders and partnerships, where the line between business and personal credit is much thinner.

Smaller Lenders are More Likely to Help

The British Business Bank found that over two-thirds (68%) of all SME lending in 2025 came from challenger and specialist banks or non-bank lenders. If a high street bank has declined you, most of the market is still in front of you.

Waiting for Your Bank to Refer You Rarely Works

Under the Government’s Bank Referral Scheme, nine major banks must offer to pass declined businesses to designated finance platforms. The results are modest. Since November 2016, 132,636 businesses have been referred, but only 6,905 deals have completed, and over the lifetime of the scheme, around 1 in 20 referred businesses went on to get finance. The average deal was £23,430.

The scheme is worth saying yes to, but it shouldn’t be your whole plan. Shopping around actively, with soft-search tools first, gives you far more control.

How Does a CCJ Affect Your Business?

A CCJ doesn’t affect every financial product equally. The table below shows where it tends to hurt and where it barely registers.

Product or relationship

Typical impact

Realistic route

Business current account

Low. Many digital providers don’t run a credit check

Digital and challenger banks

Overdraft

High. Usually needs a full credit assessment

Specialist lenders, or wait and rebuild

Business credit card

High within 12 months, lower after

Wait for 12-month thresholds; satisfy the CCJ

Unsecured business loan

High with mainstream banks

Specialist and revenue-based lenders

Secured or asset finance

Medium. The asset carries much of the risk

Asset finance providers

Invoice finance

Medium. Your customers’ credit matters more

Invoice finance providers

Supplier trade credit

Medium to high. Many suppliers run company checks

Pro forma terms while you rebuild

Leases and some energy contracts

Medium. Landlords and suppliers may ask for deposits

Offer a larger deposit or guarantor

What Happens If You Don’t Pay?

An unpaid CCJ doesn’t just sit on your file. The creditor can enforce it. Under the current civil court fees, a creditor can issue a warrant of control (bailiff action to recover money) for £96, or apply for a charging order or third-party debt order for £139 each.

For limited companies, there’s a bigger risk. A creditor owed £750 or more can petition to wind the company up. The court fee for a winding-up petition is £352, which is a small cost for a creditor compared with the consequences for your business. If your company has an unpaid CCJ and you can’t pay, get advice before it escalates.

How Do Credit Scores Work for UK Businesses?

There’s no single credit score. There are personal scores, business scores, and they’re calculated differently by each agency.

Personal Credit Scores

Three credit reference agencies (CRAs) hold consumer credit files in the UK, and each uses its own scale.

Credit agency

Score range

Experian

0 to 1,250

Equifax

0 to 1,000

TransUnion

0 to 710

Many guides still quote Experian’s old 0 to 999 scale. Experian moved to a 0 to 1,250 range from autumn 2025, though some banking apps still show the older 0 to 999 score. If you’re comparing your score against an article’s “good score” threshold, check which scale it uses.

Business Credit Scores

If you run a limited company, it has its own credit profile. Experian’s UK business score is the Commercial Delphi Score, and Creditsafe scores companies from 1 to 100, with a higher score meaning lower insolvency risk.

Business credit scores aren’t standardised across agencies, so a 70 out of 100 with Experian doesn’t mean the same as 70 with Creditsafe.

Adverse events such as CCJs and winding-up petitions have a severe negative impact on a business credit score, alongside your filed accounts, Companies House records and payment behaviour. A recent unsatisfied CCJ typically does far more damage than an older one that has been paid.

How Do Banks Share Business Credit Data?

Under the Commercial Credit Data Sharing (CCDS) scheme, the UK’s largest banks must share data on their SME customers. The designated credit reference agencies that receive this data are Dun & Bradstreet, Creditsafe, Equifax and Experian. In practice, how you run your bank account with one of those banks can show up when another lender checks you.

That picture may widen. In its May 2026 response to consultation, the Government said it was minded to expand CCDS to include business deposit account information.

How Do Credit Checks Work, and Who Runs What?

Soft Search vs Hard Search

Why Do Some Providers Not Run Credit Checks?

It seems counterintuitive that a bank would open an account without checking your credit. The reason is simple: a basic current account doesn’t lend you anything.

  • The legal requirement is identity, not credit. Banks must verify who you are and that your business is legitimate under anti-money-laundering rules. Tide, for example, runs electronic checks through third parties to verify identity and meet AML rules, which appear on your credit report but don’t affect your score.

  • No credit means no credit risk. If there’s no overdraft, the provider can’t lose money if you don’t pay.

  • Revenue comes from elsewhere. These providers earn from paid plans, transaction fees, card spending and add-ons rather than interest.

Accounts that skip the hard credit check almost always come without overdrafts or other credit facilities.

“No credit check” also doesn’t mean guaranteed approval. You’ll still need to pass ID checks, and providers can still decline certain sectors, structures or people with previous account closures.

Does a Business CCJ Affect Your Personal Credit File?

This depends almost entirely on how your business is set up.

Business structure

Likely to affect personal credit?

Why?

Sole trader

Yes, in most cases

Legally, you and the business are the same entity

General partnership

Likely

Partners are personally liable for business debts

Limited company or LLP

Not directly

The company is a separate legal entity with its own credit file

Limited company where you signed a personal guarantee

Yes, if the lender pursues you

The guarantee makes the debt yours if the company doesn’t pay

Registry Trust doesn’t link judgments to individual credit files: that decision is made by the credit reference agencies. For sole traders, a judgment against a trading name can still end up linked to you personally.

While a limited company CCJ normally stays on the company’s file, that result alone can be misleading. Three things can still pull you in:

  1. Lenders check directors too. For most UK business loans, lenders look at directors’ personal credit files alongside the company’s.

  2. Thin company files lean on directors. Where a company has little credit history of its own, agencies may use information about its directors, including personal credit history and involvement in failed businesses.

  3. Personal guarantees. If you guaranteed the debt and the creditor sues you personally, the resulting CCJ is against you, not the company.

And it works the other way. If you have a personal CCJ, it can affect your company’s applications because lenders check you as a director.

Which Business Bank Accounts Can You Open With a CCJ?

In our experience, opening an account is rarely where a CCJ causes real trouble. The bigger risk is wasting hard searches on high street applications that were always likely to fail.

These are the main options we’d look at first:

Sole traders and limited companies wanting a free, fast account

Zempler

Tide

Tide’s UK FAQ says it runs electronic identity checks to meet anti-money-laundering (AML) rules, which show on your credit report but don’t affect your score. It accepts sole traders and limited companies, and it connects to a wide lending marketplace if you need finance later.

  • Why it works: No credit assessment to open, and a free plan.

  • Limitations: Tide’s own lending has CCJ rules (see the credit card and lending sections).

  • Best for: Getting banking in place quickly while you deal with the CCJ.

Zempler

Zempler Bank states there are no credit checks to open a business account, and lists Business Go at no monthly fee, Business Extra at £9 a month and Business Pro at £19 a month. Business Extra customers can add Zempler’s CreditBuilder service at no extra cost.

  • Why it works: No credit check, plus a built-in way to rebuild your credit history.

  • Limitations: You can’t pay cheques into a Zempler business account.

  • Best for: Owners who want to start rebuilding straight away.

Mettle

Mettle says applying for or opening an account won’t affect your credit score, because it only runs a soft check to verify your identity. It doesn’t currently offer overdrafts, credit cards or loans.

  • Best for: A clean, free account while you avoid new borrowing.

Starling

Starling reviews each application case by case. Its eligibility rules say everyone connected to the business, including directors and shareholders, must meet its anti-money-laundering, fraud, and credit checks. Starling’s initial check is widely reported as a soft search, but its lending criteria are stricter. For overdrafts, Starling checks whether you or your business have missed payments, defaults or County Court Judgments.

  • Best for: Limited companies with an older or satisfied CCJ who want a full-featured free account.

For a wider shortlist, see our guide to opening a business bank account without a credit check.

Which Business Credit Cards Can You Get With a CCJ?

This is where the market is thinnest. There’s no mainstream UK business credit card built specifically for owners with a CCJ or bad credit.

Card

CCJ rule

Who can apply

Capital on Tap Business Credit Card

No unsatisfied CCJs against you or the business in the last 12 months

Zempler Business Credit Card

High street business cards

Capital on Tap

Capital on Tap requires no unsatisfied CCJs against you or your business in the last 12 months, a turnover of at least £24,000 a year, and a limited company or LLP structure. It runs a soft search on your personal file and a hard search on the business’s file.

Read that criterion carefully. It refers to unsatisfied CCJs in the last 12 months. In practice, a CCJ that’s been paid and marked satisfied, or one older than 12 months, may not rule you out, although the rest of your profile still has to stack up.

Tide’s business credit card is offered in partnership with Capital on Tap, so expect similar criteria.

Zempler Business Credit Card

Several comparison sites still list this card as an option for bad credit. Zempler’s own credit card page says it will reopen applications as soon as it can, which means it isn’t currently available to new customers. If you’re relying on it, you’ll be disappointed.

What If You Can’t Get a Credit Card Yet?

  • Use Zempler’s CreditBuilder with a Business Extra account to build a payment history without a card.

  • Use an expense or prepaid card for spending control. Tide’s Expense Card, for example, needs no credit check, though it won’t build your credit.

  • Wait for the 12-month mark if your CCJ is recent, while you satisfy it and keep everything else clean.

What Business Lending Can You Get With a CCJ?

Business loans with a CCJ are possible, but the type of finance matters more than the lender’s marketing. Lenders that care less about your credit file usually care more about something else: your card takings, your customers or an asset.

What Do Specific Lenders Actually Say?

  • iwoca: iwoca says it focuses on the current strength of a business and tries to overlook historic issues where possible, and has lent to many businesses without perfect credit histories. It runs soft credit checks when you apply.

  • Tide Credit Line: Tide’s Credit Line requires no CCJs against your business in the last 12 months, alongside other criteria including a minimum annual turnover of £100,000.

  • Start Up Loans: The government-backed scheme says poor credit isn’t necessarily a barrier, but it does run a full credit check on applicants. Each owner can apply for up to £25,000, and businesses trading for up to five years are eligible.

  • Community development finance institutions (CDFIs): These are non-profit lenders that may approve a loan for a business declined elsewhere. Responsible Finance data shows 94% of CDFI borrowers in 2024 had previously been declined by another lender.

Most lending to limited companies isn’t covered by the same consumer credit protections as personal borrowing. That makes it more important to read the agreement, check the total cost, and be wary of any lender asking for an upfront fee before releasing funds. Legitimate lenders take fees from the loan, not before it.

What Steps Should You Take If Your Business Gets a CCJ?

Work through these in order. The first two are the most time-sensitive.

  1. Respond to any claim straight away. After a creditor makes a claim, you have 14 days to respond; if you don’t, the court can enter judgment. Many CCJs are “default” judgments made simply because nobody replied.

  2. Find out exactly what’s registered. Search the official register on TrustOnline and get your personal and business credit reports.

  3. If you can, pay within one calendar month. This is the only route that removes a valid CCJ completely. Get proof of payment and send it to the court. A certificate of satisfaction or cancellation (form N443) costs £19.

  4. If the CCJ is wrong, apply to set it aside. An application on notice costs £321, or £126 if it’s by consent or without notice. If the creditor agrees it should go, a consent application is far cheaper.

  5. If you can’t pay in full, ask to change the terms. An application to vary a judgment or suspend enforcement costs £16. This is usually made on form N245.

  6. Once paid, get it marked satisfied. Don’t assume the creditor will tell the court. Apply on form N443 yourself.

  7. Check that the credit reference agencies have updated. Registry Trust passes judgment data to the agencies exactly as the court sends it, so chase the court if your file doesn’t change.

  8. Start rebuilding. Use the steps in the next section.

Help with Fees can reduce court fees for individuals on low incomes, including sole traders. It’s generally not available to limited companies.

How Can You Improve Your Chances of Approval?

When we speak to lenders, the same message comes up: a CCJ is a data point, not a verdict. What surrounds it carries real weight.

Before You Apply

  • Satisfy the CCJ and get the certificate. Paid and marked satisfied reads very differently from unpaid.

  • Plan around 12-month thresholds. Capital on Tap and Tide’s Credit Line both use them. Note the date your CCJ turns 12 months old.

  • File your accounts and confirmation statement on time. Late filings at Companies House hurt business credit scores.

  • Check every credit file for errors. Wrong addresses, duplicate entries and paid-but-unmarked CCJs are common.

  • Separate business and personal money. Mixed finances make your statements harder for an underwriter to read.

When You Apply

  • Use soft-search eligibility tools first. Only make a full application where your odds look good.

  • Prepare a short explanation. One paragraph covering what happened, when, what you’ve done about it and why it won’t happen again.

  • Show recent strength. Six months of clean bank statements, connected via Open Banking where possible, often matter more to specialist lenders than an old blemish.

  • Ask for a realistic amount. A smaller first facility, repaid on time, opens the door to more later.

  • Consider security or a guarantor, but only if you fully understand what you’re putting at risk.

Thresholds Worth Knowing

Product

CCJ rule

Timing

Capital on Tap credit card

No unsatisfied CCJs in the last 12 months

Satisfying the CCJ may help before the 12 months are up

Tide Credit Line

No CCJs against the business in the last 12 months

Wait for the 12-month mark

Starling overdraft or loan

CCJs checked as part of a full credit assessment; 24 months’ trading needed

Older, satisfied CCJs stand a better chance

Start Up Loans

Full credit check; poor credit is not an automatic bar

Be upfront and explain it

What Should You Avoid Doing With a CCJ?

  • Don’t fire off multiple hard applications. Each decline leaves a visible mark and makes the next lender more cautious.

  • Don’t pay a “CCJ removal” service. Only the court can remove a judgment from the register by setting it aside or cancelling it. Anyone charging you to “remove” a valid CCJ can’t do anything you can’t do yourself for £19 to £321.

  • Don’t ignore enforcement letters. An unpaid CCJ can lead to bailiffs, charging orders or, for companies, a winding-up petition.

  • Don’t borrow expensively to clear a small CCJ without comparing. Paying off a £400 judgment with a high-cost advance can leave you worse off. Speak to a free adviser first.

  • Don’t close the company to escape the debt. Dissolving a company with unpaid creditors can be challenged, and directors’ conduct can be investigated.

  • Don’t sign a personal guarantee you haven’t read. It’s the most common way a company debt becomes a personal CCJ.

  • Don’t pay upfront fees to unknown lenders. It’s a common sign of loan fee fraud.

Why Use BusinessComparison When Credit Is an Issue?

Here’s why we think we’re still the right service when your credit isn’t perfect:

  • We check what’s actually available. We won’t recommend providers that aren’t taking new applications. We check with providers directly.

  • We help you avoid wasted hard searches. Our guides point you to no-credit-check accounts and soft-search tools before you make a full application.

  • Our service is built for businesses. BusinessComparison is shaped around British businesses, not bolted on to a consumer comparison site.

If you were declined by your bank, compare the business bank accounts for bad credit available to you now, rather than waiting for a referral that, on the Government’s own figures, succeeds only 1 in 20 times.

FAQs on Banking, Lending and Accessing Credit With a CCJ

Can I open a business bank account with a CCJ?

Yes. Providers such as Tide, Zempler Bank, Mettle and Countingup either run no credit check or only a soft one to open an account. You’ll still need to pass identity checks, and these accounts usually don’t come with an overdraft.

Does a CCJ against my limited company affect my personal credit score?

Usually not directly. A judgment against a limited company sits on the company’s credit file. It can become personal if you signed a personal guarantee and the creditor sues you, and lenders will check your personal file when you apply for business credit as a director.

How long does a CCJ stay on my credit file?

Six years from the judgment date, unless you pay in full within one calendar month or the court sets it aside. If you pay later, it stays for six years but is marked as satisfied.

Does paying a CCJ remove it?

Only if you pay in full within one calendar month of the judgment date. After that, paying gets it marked as satisfied, which lenders view more favourably, but it stays on your file for the full six years.

Can I get a business loan with a CCJ?

Yes, but usually not from a high street bank while the CCJ is recent or unpaid. Specialist lenders, revenue-based lenders, invoice finance, asset finance and community development lenders are more realistic routes.

Can I get a business credit card with a CCJ?

It depends on timing. Capital on Tap excludes applicants with unsatisfied CCJs in the last 12 months, so paying and satisfying the CCJ, or waiting until it’s over a year old, improves your chances.

How much does it cost to get a CCJ set aside?

The court fee is £321 for an application on notice, or £126 if the application is by consent, as of the July 2026 civil court fees list. Individuals on low incomes may qualify for Help with Fees.

Will a CCJ stop me opening a limited company?

No. Registering a company with Companies House doesn’t involve a credit check. A CCJ affects borrowing and some banking decisions, not your right to incorporate.
