If you've had a quote from British Gas for your business gas or electricity, the name alone probably carries some weight. This is the supplier that's been part of UK life for two centuries, and it's still the biggest name in business energy by customer numbers. But scale and brand recognition aren't the same as being the right fit for your business, and the independent data on British Gas is more mixed than its market position suggests.

This guide covers what British Gas Business actually is, what it charges, how its tariffs work, what real customers and independent bodies say about its service, and where it wins or loses against the rest of the UK business energy market.

We'll also cover the practical bits: how to switch to British Gas, how to leave if it isn't working out, and how to compare it properly against everyone else before you sign anything.

More About British Gas

British Gas traces its roots back to the Gas Light and Coke Company, incorporated in 1812 and, by British Gas's own account, the UK's first utility company from 1815. The business was nationalised under the Gas Act 1948, became the British Gas Corporation in 1973, and was privatised as British Gas plc in 1986. In 1997, British Gas plc demerged into two companies: the retail and services arm became Centrica, retaining the British Gas brand for UK supply, while the exploration and production arm became BG Group, which was later acquired by Shell in 2016.

Today, British Gas Trading Limited operates as a subsidiary of Centrica plc, a FTSE 100 company headquartered in Windsor, Berkshire. Centrica's Group Chief Executive is Chris O'Shea, appointed in March 2020. British Gas Business sits within the Centrica family alongside British Gas's domestic supply arm, British Gas Services (boiler cover, Hive), and Centrica Business Solutions, which handles larger-scale commercial energy projects.

By its own account, British Gas supplies more than 350,000 UK businesses, from sole traders to large multi-site organisations, making it the UK's largest business energy supplier by customer numbers. That's a different measure from overall market share: on the domestic side, Cornwall Insight data showed Octopus Energy overtaking British Gas as Britain's biggest energy company overall in late 2024, ending a top spot British Gas had held since privatisation in 1986. British Gas remains the largest single business energy book, even though it's no longer the largest energy supplier in the country overall.

Where British Gas Fits in the UK Energy Market

The original 'Big Six' (British Gas, EDF, E.ON, npower, Scottish Power and SSE) dominated the market for two decades, but that line-up no longer exists in its original form. E.ON acquired npower in 2019, and OVO Energy acquired SSE's domestic supply business in 2020. Octopus Energy, a challenger brand launched in 2015, grew large enough through organic growth and acquisitions (including Bulb's customers and Shell Energy's UK domestic business) to take one of the vacated places.

As of 2026, the six largest energy suppliers in the UK by market share are Octopus Energy, British Gas, E.ON Next, OVO Energy, EDF Energy and ScottishPower, and this is what most energy comparison sites and journalists mean when they use the term now. British Gas is still very much part of that group, just no longer at the top of it.

Which Businesses is British Gas Suitable For?

British Gas is a reasonable fit if you recognise your business in any of these:

  • Businesses that value institutional stability over the lowest possible price. As part of FTSE 100-listed Centrica, British Gas offers a level of financial backing and longevity that smaller independents can't match.

  • Businesses that want zero carbon electricity without paying extra or actively choosing it. It's the standard offer on new and renewed fixed contracts, not an upsell.

  • Medium to large businesses that want dedicated account management. British Gas assigns account support to bigger customers, which can matter if your energy needs are complex.

  • Businesses spanning a wide range of sizes under one supplier. From British Gas Lite for small operations spending under £30,000 a year, through standard fixed plans, to Flex Advantage services for organisations using over 1GWh annually, the product range covers most business sizes.

  • Businesses that need new connections, meter upgrades or commercial landlord support. British Gas has a long-established engineering network for physical works that some newer suppliers don't offer directly.

  • Businesses with multiple or half-hourly meters that want half-hourly settlement data through a single account via Energy360 DataView.

When a Different Supplier Makes More Sense

British Gas isn't the best option for everyone, and the independent data makes that fairly clear.

The Business Tariffs British Gas Offers

British Gas doesn't publish one universal price list any more than most large suppliers do. Quotes are built around postcode, meter type and usage, so the products below are what you'll be offered rather than fixed prices. As of 2026, the main options are:

Fixed Price Energy Plan. The standard product, locking in your unit rate and standing charge for 1 to 4 years. Zero carbon electricity is included as standard, backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin and nuclear declarations for the contract term.

British Gas Lite. A separate, digital-first brand for small businesses spending under £30,000 a year on energy. It includes a smart meter, monthly Direct Debit billing, and account management entirely online, with support through webchat rather than a phone line.

Variable and rolling plans. The tariff you land on if a fixed contract ends, and you don't renew. Rates move with the market, you get 30 days' notice of price changes, and there are no exit fees.

Renewable Business Energy. An upgrade for businesses wanting stronger green credentials than the standard Zero Carbon offer. Natural Renewable Electricity backs 100% of your supply with REGOs from UK solar, wind and hydro sources, and is generally pitched at higher-usage customers rather than small SMEs.

Renewable Gas and Carbon Neutral Gas. Renewable Gas backs 100% of your gas supply with UK-sourced Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin. Carbon Neutral Gas backs 10% with RGGOs and offsets the remaining 90% through carbon reduction projects.

Flex Advantage. Bespoke contracts for organisations using more than 1GWh of energy a year, with access to an online purchasing portal, real-time Energy360 insights and quarterly market reports.

PeakSave for Business. Rewards eligible customers with a working smart meter for shifting usage to the same weekly time slot, off-peak, over six weeks, crediting half-price electricity straight to the bill during PeakSave event hours.

Commercial landlord and new connection services. Meter installation, upgrades and connections for landlords managing supply between tenants, and new commercial sites without an existing connection.

British Gas's Business Contract Terms

British Gas's standard fixed contracts run from 1 to 4 years. Variable and rolling plans have no fixed term and no exit fees. There's an important point worth flagging clearly: unlike domestic energy contracts, business energy contracts, British Gas's included, don't come with a statutory cooling-off period. Once you've signed, you're generally committed for the length of the agreement, so it's worth checking terms carefully before you do.

British Gas contacts customers around 70 days before their fixed contract ends, ahead of Ofgem's minimum 60-day notice requirement for microbusinesses, and lets you lock in a renewal rate without a break in supply. If your contract ends and you take no action, you move onto a variable plan rather than losing supply. If you're moving into premises British Gas already supplies without arranging your own agreement, you can instead default onto a deemed contract, and deemed and out-of-contract rates are consistently among the more expensive options on the market. Our guide to deemed contract energy rates explains why, and what to do if you've already been moved onto one.

British Gas Business Prices

British Gas publishes one genuinely useful reference point that many suppliers don't: an Ofgem-mandated maximum price disclosure for microbusiness customers, showing the most a microbusiness will pay on a new or renewed single-rate fixed contract. As of 27 May 2026, those ceiling prices are:

Fixed term

Electricity unit rate

Electricity standing charge

Gas unit rate

Gas standing charge

1 year

38.41p/kWh

£3.34/day

12.54p/kWh

£17.10/day

2 years

37.81p/kWh

£3.80/day

11.44p/kWh

£17.84/day

3 years

38.04p/kWh

£4.28/day

10.92p/kWh

£18.63/day

4 years

38.04p/kWh

£4.62/day

11.07p/kWh

£19.75/day

Figures exclude VAT and the Climate Change Levy. These are maximum prices, not typical quotes: British Gas's own guidance describes them as "the most microbusinesses will pay", and most customers negotiate below these ceilings, particularly on unit rate. Standing charges on these maximum tables sit well above typical market averages, so they shouldn't be read as representative pricing.

Outside of that regulatory ceiling, British Gas doesn't publish a standard rate card for negotiated fixed contracts, so live quotes will usually undercut the table above. Based on broader UK business energy market data for 2026, typical negotiated fixed rates across the market run roughly 22 to 30p/kWh for electricity and 6.5 to 9p/kWh for gas, though your actual quote depends heavily on postcode, usage band, meter type and contract length. Use our free business energy calculator tool to work out your usage before requesting quotes, and treat any single figure, including the table above, as a starting point rather than a guarantee.

One thing worth knowing: unlike suppliers that require a blanket advance payment from every new customer, British Gas generally only asks for a deposit, commonly reported in the region of £200 to £1,000, where a business's credit check comes back weaker. It's not automatic for every switch the way some competitors' advance payments are.

How British Gas Backs Up Sustainability Claims

British Gas includes Zero Carbon electricity as standard on all new and renewed fixed-term business contracts, at no extra cost. British Gas describes this as a blend of roughly 72% renewable and 28% nuclear generation, backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) and nuclear declarations for the length of the contract. As with most large suppliers' green claims, it's worth understanding what REGO backing does and doesn't mean: it guarantees that renewable generation equivalent to your usage exists somewhere on the grid over the course of a year, not that the electricity reaching your meter came directly from a wind farm.

For businesses wanting to go further, Natural Renewable Electricity backs 100% of supply with REGOs from UK solar, wind and hydro sources specifically, generally aimed at higher-usage customers. On the gas side, Renewable Gas backs 100% of supply with UK-sourced Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin, while Carbon Neutral Gas blends a 10% RGGO-backed share with offsetting for the rest. British Gas also invests in carbon offsetting projects to balance unavoidable emissions as part of its wider sustainability commitments, alongside Centrica's group-level work on battery storage and low-carbon generation.

British Gas's Fuel Mix

Fuel mix reporting for British Gas is worth reading carefully, because different sources report meaningfully different figures depending on the period and methodology used. The most recent independently verified figures, from Citizens Advice's October to December 2025 supplier data, show British Gas's overall fuel mix as:

Source

Share

Fossil fuel

21%

Nuclear

57%

Renewable

20%

Other

2%

British Gas's own annual Fuel Mix Disclosure, covering April 2024 to March 2025, reports a different split: roughly 55% nuclear, 35% renewable, 8% natural gas, 1% coal and 1% other. And the "Zero Carbon" marketing claim used on its fixed business tariffs describes a further split again, around 72% renewable and 28% nuclear. These three figures aren't directly comparable: they cover different time periods and different scopes (whole-company generation versus the specific product backing a fixed tariff), and British Gas doesn't reconcile them in one place. The honest takeaway is that British Gas's electricity is consistently low on fossil fuel and split between nuclear and renewable sources, but exactly what split you'll see quoted depends on which of British Gas's own figures, or which independent source, you're looking at.

What Real Businesses Say About British Gas

Customer service is the area where British Gas's reputation is most mixed, and it's worth setting expectations accordingly.

Trustpilot. British Gas's main UK profile is rated "Excellent" at 4.4 out of 5 from over 350,000 reviews as of late July 2026, a high review volume reflecting the sheer size of its customer base. That page combines domestic and business reviews rather than separating them. British Gas Lite, its dedicated small-business digital brand, has its own Trustpilot profile rated "Bad" at 1.1 out of 5 from around 4,000 reviews, with recurring complaints about billing disputes, webchat-only support and slow complaint resolution. That gap matters: a strong headline Trustpilot score for "British Gas" doesn't automatically apply to the Lite product some small businesses are quoted.

Citizens Advice. For October to December 2025, British Gas scored 2.28 out of 5 overall, ranking 14th of 16 suppliers assessed. Its breakdown: 1.0 out of 5 for fewer complaints received (73.5 complaints per 10,000 customers), 3.6 out of 5 for contact waiting time (average call wait of 1 minute 31 seconds, 97.1% of emails answered within two days), 1.4 out of 5 for billing and metering (84.76% smart meter bill accuracy, 90.85% of smart meters working correctly), and a full 5 out of 5 for customer commitments, reflecting membership of the Energy Switch Guarantee and Vulnerability Commitment schemes.

Which? British Gas is not currently a Which? Recommended Provider. Its 2026 survey, covering research from September to November 2025 and a customer survey of nearly 12,000 energy customers, gave British Gas an overall score of 59%, placing it third from bottom of the suppliers assessed and just 2 stars for overall customer service. Which? found it offered "a good amount" of support to customers who needed it, but flagged weaker performance on resolving complaints and switching customers smoothly.

Reddit and wider sentiment. Business-specific discussion is thin compared with the volume of domestic commentary, echoing what we've found researching other suppliers in this series: most business owners simply don't post about their energy supplier the way they might about a bank or accountant. Where British Gas does come up, the pattern broadly tracks the other three sources: praise for engineer reliability and its established HomeCare and technical support network, set against recurring frustration over billing accuracy and how long complaints take to resolve.

It's also worth noting, in the interest of a complete picture, that in May 2026 British Gas agreed to pay up to £112 million in compensation after Ofgem found it had wrongly installed prepayment meters, including forced entries into some customers' homes, between 2018 and 2021. That finding relates to domestic customers rather than business accounts specifically, but it's a relevant, dated data point on the supplier's recent regulatory record.

The honest summary: British Gas's scale and financial backing are genuine strengths, and its Trustpilot score reflects a lot of broadly satisfied customers. But on the two most rigorous independent measures, Citizens Advice and Which?, it sits below the Big Six average rather than above it, and it isn't currently recognised as a top performer by either body. That's a meaningfully different picture from a supplier that scores consistently well across all the same sources, and it's worth weighing against the reassurance of its size and history.

Smart Meters, Apps and Technology

British Gas installs SMETS2 smart meters for business customers at no extra cost for microbusinesses, with installation typically taking around an hour. Non-micro businesses exchanging an existing AMR meter for SMETS2 may face a charge. Appointments run in four-hour slots between 8 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday. As part of the industry-wide Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) programme, all suppliers, British Gas included, must complete the transition to half-hourly settlement by May 2027.

Beyond metering, the wider British Gas toolkit for business customers includes:

  • Energy360 DataView, giving smart and half-hourly metered customers half-hourly consumption data to help spot waste and manage costs.

  • PeakSave for Business, crediting half-price electricity during designated off-peak events to customers with a working smart meter.

  • Online account management, for meter readings, billing and tariff renewals.

  • Commercial meter installation and connections, backed by a long-established nationwide engineering team, useful for landlords, new sites and complex multi-meter setups.

One area where British Gas is notably less developed than some newer entrants: EV and fleet charging support for business customers. Its Hive EV charger is primarily a domestic product, and Centrica's own fleet electrification expertise (it's committed to electrifying its 12,000-strong vehicle fleet by 2030) currently sits mainly within Centrica Business Solutions rather than a dedicated, simple product for small business fleets. If EV charging infrastructure is a priority, it's worth checking what a challenger supplier offers by comparison.

Switching to British Gas, Step by Step

  1. Get a quote. You'll need your business address and postcode, estimated annual consumption from a recent bill, and ideally your MPAN (electricity) or MPRN (gas) reference number.

  2. Choose your tariff and contract length. British Gas will show unit rates, standing charges and contract terms for your usage, from 1 to 4 years fixed, or a variable plan.

  3. British Gas handles the switch for you, including contacting your current supplier on your behalf. Unlike some suppliers that require you to notify your old provider yourself, this is one part of the process British Gas takes off your plate.

  4. A credit check is carried out on the business and, in some cases, its owner. Accounts with a weaker credit profile may be asked for a deposit, commonly reported in the region of £200 to £1,000.

  5. The switch completes, which British Gas states should take around 5 working days once your account is up to date and you're not tied into an existing contract elsewhere.

  6. Provide a meter reading to ensure accurate opening billing.

  7. Ongoing billing runs through monthly Direct Debit, with a discount typically available for paying this way.

Exit Fees and Ending Your Contract Early

There's no statutory cooling-off period on business energy contracts. This is worth repeating because it catches people out: domestic energy customers get 14 days to change their mind, but business customers, British Gas's included, generally don't. Read contract terms carefully before signing.

Fixed-term contracts can carry exit fees if you leave early. British Gas doesn't publish a single fixed figure; the amount is set out in your specific contract terms and depends on your tariff and remaining contract length. Based on broader market comparisons, typical business energy exit fees across UK suppliers tend to sit in the region of £60 to £150 per fuel, though your contract is the definitive source.

Variable, rolling and out-of-contract plans carry no exit fees, so you can move to a new supplier at any time.

The renewal window opens around 70 days before your contract ends. Switching or renewing within that window, rather than waiting for the hard end date, is the standard way to avoid triggering an early termination charge.

If you're moving premises, notify British Gas as early as possible. If you don't arrange continued supply at your new address, and no new agreement is in place, your account may default onto deemed rates rather than a fixed contract.

Leaving British Gas to Switch Suppliers

Leaving British Gas works the same way as leaving any UK business energy supplier:

  1. Get quotes from other suppliers before your current contract ends, ideally starting the comparison around 90 days out.

  2. Check your exit fee position against your specific contract terms, and try to time the switch within your renewal window wherever possible.

  3. Confirm the switch with your new supplier, who will typically handle notifying British Gas on your behalf.

  4. Give a final meter reading on your last day of supply for an accurate closing bill.

  5. Settle any outstanding balance. Unlike suppliers that hold a refundable advance payment, British Gas's deposit system (where applied) is generally smaller and tied to credit risk rather than a blanket sum, so there's less to chase at the end, but it's still worth confirming your final account is settled correctly.

Why Compare Before You Commit?

British Gas is a genuinely large, financially stable supplier with a wide product range, but its independent service scores are weaker than several of its Big Six rivals, and it isn't currently the cheapest option by most market comparisons either. Rates depend on your postcode, usage band, meter type and contract length, all of which shift the answer from one business to the next, and biggest isn't the same as best value.

That's exactly what comparing properly solves. Tell us your postcode, estimated usage and current contract end date, and we'll compare live quotes across our panel of suppliers, British Gas included, rather than asking you to chase individual quotes yourself. Start with our simple, free business energy calculator if you're not sure of your usage, or go straight to comparing business energy suppliers if you already have a recent bill to hand.

British Gas Business FAQs

Is British Gas good for business energy?

It depends what you're optimising for. It's a solid choice if institutional stability, nationwide engineering support and zero carbon electricity as standard matter most to you. If customer service quality is your priority, independent data from Citizens Advice and Which? both place it below several Big Six rivals as of late 2025 and 2026.

Is British Gas part of the Big Six?

Yes. It's one of the original Big Six and remains one of the six largest suppliers by market share under the current 2026 definition, alongside Octopus Energy, E.ON Next, OVO Energy, EDF Energy and ScottishPower.

How do I get a business energy quote from British Gas?

You can request a quote directly through British Gas's website using your postcode and estimated annual consumption, or compare it alongside other suppliers using a service like BusinessComparison to see how it stacks up before you commit.

Does British Gas charge exit fees for business customers?

Typically, yes, on fixed-term contracts, though the exact amount is set out in your individual contract rather than published as a flat fee. Variable and rolling plans carry no exit fees.

Is there a cooling-off period on British Gas business contracts?

No. Business energy contracts, unlike domestic ones, don't come with a statutory cooling-off period, so it's important to check terms carefully before signing.

What happens if I don't renew my British Gas business contract?

You're typically moved onto a variable rate plan rather than losing supply. If you're moving into premises already supplied by British Gas without arranging a new agreement, you may instead default onto a deemed contract, which is rarely the cheapest option available.

Does British Gas supply business gas as well as electricity?

Yes, on the same fixed contract lengths as electricity, with its own renewable and carbon-neutral gas upgrade options.

Is British Gas's business electricity really zero carbon?

Its standard fixed tariffs are backed by REGO certificates and nuclear declarations covering a blend of renewable and nuclear generation, the same broad mechanism most large suppliers use. For a fully renewable, REGO-backed supply specifically, you'd need to upgrade to Natural Renewable Electricity.

Our Verdict: Should You Switch?

Best for: businesses that want the reassurance of the UK's largest, most established business energy supplier, zero carbon electricity included as standard, and access to a genuinely nationwide engineering and account management network, particularly medium to large organisations with more complex energy needs.

Think twice if: customer service quality ranks high on your list of priorities. Two of the most rigorous independent measures available, Citizens Advice and Which?, both currently place British Gas below the Big Six average, and it isn't recognised as a top performer by either.

British Gas earned its position through more than a century of continuous operation and genuine scale, and that shows up in real strengths: financial stability, a wide product range spanning micro-businesses to large industrial users, and zero carbon electricity as standard at no extra cost. But size and longevity aren't the same as being the best-reviewed or the cheapest, and on the data currently available, British Gas sits in a more mixed position than its market presence might suggest. For the typical BusinessComparison reader, it's worth including in your comparison rather than defaulting to it on name recognition alone.

The right move is the same one we'd recommend before signing with any supplier: compare your actual quote against the rest of the market, weigh the service data against your own priorities, and don't let a familiar name substitute for checking the numbers.
