Cheapest Business Broadband for Video Calls

Compare the cheapest UK business broadband deals that actually work for video calls. See prices, speeds and best options for small businesses side-by-side.

Offices getting the best business energy deals in the UK know their annual consumption, understand how unit rates and standing charges work, and compare quotes on a balanced basis before their contract renewal window closes. Our guide will take you through this method step by step.

Finding the Cheapest Office Business Energy

Before you run a quote, pull up your last energy bill and find five numbers:

  1. Electricity consumption in kWh (annual or 12 monthly totals added up)

  2. Gas consumption in kWh (as above)

  3. Standing charge for each fuel, in pence per day

  4. Meter type (standard, smart, or half-hourly)

  5. Contract end date and any notice period

With this information, you can get like-for-like quotes rather than generic market rates. Generic rates aren’t helpful for decision-making because your standing charge and consumption profile can swing the true annual cost by hundreds of pounds.

The quickest comparison path is to enter your postcode and consumption figures into BusinessComparison's quote tool to get office-specific results across multiple suppliers, ranked by annualised cost.

No Price Cap on Business Energy Rates

Ofgem’s energy price cap applies to domestic households only, not business customers. This is the single most important thing to know before starting your search.

Price cap changes get significant media coverage in the UK, and they do affect your bills at home. But they have no direct bearing on what your office pays. Business electricity and gas prices move with wholesale energy markets, not with any regulated limit.

Two offices with the same address and identical consumption can pay very different amounts depending on when they last renewed, what tariff they're on, and whether they're currently in or out of contract. That gap can be substantial.

There are non-domestic protections worth knowing about. Following Ofgem's Non-Domestic Market Review decision in 2024, the Standards of Conduct were extended from microbusinesses to all business customers, with licence requirements taking effect from July of that year. This includes greater transparency obligations on broker fees. These rules are a safety net for fair trading, not a price guarantee. So they won't reduce your bill unless you actively compare and switch.

The Government energy support schemes that provided some relief during the 2022-24 energy crisis have also wound up. The Energy Bill Relief Scheme ran from October 2022 to March 2023 and is now closed. It was followed by the Energy Bills Discount Scheme, which ran from April 2023 to March 2024, also now closed. No equivalent scheme is currently in place for commercial users in the UK.

Why Offices Often Overpay for Business Energy

Most offices overpay because of one of these six patterns:

1. Out-of-Contract and Deemed Rates

When a contract expires without renewal, most suppliers automatically move you onto out-of-contract (sometimes called rollover or deemed contract rates), which are significantly higher than negotiated tariffs. This is one of the most costly billing scenarios for small UK offices.

2. Not Comparing Like-for-Like

A quote with a lower unit rate but a higher standing charge can cost more annually for a low-use office. VAT obligations, green tariff premiums, and time-of-use components can also distort direct comparisons.

3. Ignoring the Standing Charge

For offices with lower electricity consumption, the standing charge on business electricity can represent a disproportionately large share of the annual bill. Chasing the lowest unit rate while ignoring a high daily standing charge is a very common mistake.

4. Missing the Switch Window

Most commercial contracts specify a notice window (often 30 to 90 days before expiry) during which you must act to avoid auto-renewal. Miss it, and you may be locked in for another term at a rate you didn't choose.

5. Forgetting About Dual-Fuel

If your office uses both fuels, dual-fuel bundles from some suppliers can produce a lower combined cost than two independent contracts. This isn't always the case, so it's worth requesting both options.

6. Using Estimated, Not Actual Consumption

Quotes based on estimated usage can be misleading. If your last bill was an estimate, ask your supplier for an actual read, or submit one yourself before comparing.

Business Energy Comparison Checklist

To compare business energy deals on a genuinely equal footing, check each quote against the same set of criteria for electricity and gas separately.

Electricity

  • Unit rate in p/kWh (including Climate Change Levy and network charges)

  • Standing charge in p/day

  • Contract length (typically 1-3 years, sometimes 4)

  • Fixed vs variable mechanics (see below)

  • Early termination terms

Gas

  • Same unit rate and standing charge checks as above

  • Confirm the consumption figure is your actual annual usage

Fixed vs Variable Energy Tariffs

For most small offices, there is a choice between fixed and variable energy rates:

  • Fixed: Your unit rate is frozen for the contract term, regardless of wholesale market movements. This gives cost certainty and simplifies budgeting. If wholesale prices fall significantly, you won't benefit. Whether to fix currently depends on your view of the market direction. For more details, see this analysis of whether to fix your business energy rates.

  • Variable: The rate moves with market conditions. Can be cheaper if wholesale prices fall, but exposes the business to spikes.

  • Pass-through: Common for larger contracts. Network and non-commodity charges are passed on at cost rather than being bundled into the unit rate. Usually not relevant for small office-based SMEs in the UK.

  • Time-of-use: Rates vary by time of day. Relevant if your office operates very predictable hours and can shift consumption, but adds complexity.

For most small offices, a fixed-rate contract remains the most straightforward way to control costs and budget accurately. For context on how non-commodity energy costs (network charges, levies, etc.) affect the overall bill beyond the headline unit rate, it's worth reviewing these separately.

Validating Your kWh Figures

If your most recent bill was based on an estimated reading, submit an actual meter reading to your current supplier and request a corrected bill before running quotes. Quotes based on inaccurate consumption estimates will invariably produce misleading annual cost figures. If your office has a half-hourly meter, your consumption data is automatically recorded and should be available from your supplier or directly from your meter operator.

Typical Annual Energy Costs for Offices

The formula for calculating your true annual electricity or gas cost is straightforward:

Annual cost = (annual kWh x unit rate in p/kWh) / 100 + (365 x standing charge in p/day) / 100

The table below shows how this plays out across three typical office profiles. Figures use illustrative mid-2026 rate ranges and are for comparison methodology purposes only. Actual quotes will vary by location, supplier, and contract terms.

Office profile

Annual kWh (electricity)

Unit rate (p/kWh)

Standing charge (p/day)

Estimated annual cost

Small (5 people)

8,000 kWh

28p

60p

£2,459

Medium (10-15 people)

20,000 kWh

26p

55p

£5,401

Larger (20-30 people)

40,000 kWh

24p

50p

£9,783

Now look at what happens when the standing charge changes (even with the same unit rate). For the small office example used above, if the standing charge rises from 60p to 95p per day:

  • Annual consumption cost: £2,240 (unchanged)

  • Standing charge cost: £347 per year (vs £219)

  • New annual total: £2,587 (+£128 just from the standing charge)

For the current context of where average UK business energy prices sit, including how office-based companies compare to other business types, you can benchmark your consumption before running a formal quote.

How Long Does Switching Business Energy Take?

Business energy switching typically takes between four and six weeks from the point you sign a new contract. Your new supplier handles coordination with the existing one to minimise the hassle on your part, and there's no interruption to the electricity or gas supply to your premises whatsoever.

To launch a switch, you'll need:

  1. Your current supplier name and account number

  2. Your MPAN (electricity) and/or MPRN (gas) from your bill

  3. Your contract end date and notice period

  4. Your annual consumption figures (from the bill)

  5. A recent or actual meter reading

  6. Your business name, address, and an authorised signatory

If you're within your notice window (usually 30-90 days before expiry), don’t delay. Missing this window is the most common way UK offices end up on expensive out-of-contract energy rates.

If you've already missed the renewal date and rolled over onto deemed or out-of-contract rates, don’t panic. Lots of suppliers will allow you to terminate without penalty from a rollover situation, but confirm this in writing before assuming. Get your bill, check the current rate per kWh against quoted alternatives, and calculate how much the delay is costing your company per month. That figure often makes the urgency of switching very clear.

For a broader view of the best business energy suppliers for small companies, including service quality and contract flexibility assessments, it's worth combining some research with your cost comparison.

FAQs: Cheapest Business Energy for Offices

Which is usually cheaper for offices: fixed or variable?

Fixed rates are generally preferable for most small offices because they eliminate exposure to wholesale price volatility and simplify budgeting. Variable rates can deliver savings if wholesale prices fall, but the risk runs both ways.

The right answer depends on the current market position and your risk tolerance. In a volatile or rising wholesale market, fixing provides certainty at a cost that's usually worth paying.

Does business energy have a price cap like households?

No. Ofgem's energy price cap is a domestic measure only. Business energy prices are not regulated by a cap and move with wholesale market conditions. This is why the date of your contract renewal and your tariff type can have a much larger impact on what you pay than they would for a household.

What if my office has low energy usage?

For lower-consumption offices, the standing charge can account for 20-30% or more of the total annual bill. When comparing tariffs, always check whether a lower unit rate is offset by a higher standing charge. Run the full annual cost formula before deciding.

Do I need meter readings to switch?

You don't need a live reading to get quotes, but you should provide one before completing a switch. An actual reading ensures your final bill from the old supplier is accurate and prevents disputes. If you have a smart meter, readings are captured automatically.

Are there extra charges beyond the unit rate?

Yes. Business energy bills typically include the Climate Change Levy (CCL), VAT (usually 20%, though some businesses qualify for a reduced 5% rate if energy is used primarily for non-business purposes or if consumption is below certain thresholds), and network/distribution charges.

When comparing quotes, confirm whether the stated unit rate is fully inclusive of these, or whether they're added on top. Non-commodity costs have risen steadily in the UK and can represent a meaningful portion of the final bill for SMEs.

How do broker fees affect the comparison?

Energy brokers and comparison services are typically remunerated by suppliers through a commission that may or may not be reflected in the quoted rate. Under Ofgem's expanded Standards of Conduct (effective July 2024), brokers must be transparent about this.

BusinessComparison's quote process surfaces tariffs from across the market, and any commercial arrangements are disclosed so you can evaluate the true cost of the deal.
