Valda Energy and Yu Energy are both independent challengers in the UK business energy market. Despite this, they do operate on quite different models. Valda is a small, SME-only supplier founded in 2019 that runs almost entirely on prepayment. It's aimed at sole traders and small businesses that want to avoid a surprise bill. Yu Energy (styled as Yü) is AIM-listed Yü Group plc, and supplies gas, electricity and water to everything from micro-businesses to large industrial and commercial (I&C) sites spending over £100,000 a year.
TLDR: Yu is the better choice for most businesses beyond the very smallest, thanks to its wider tariff range, multi-utility offering, and support for half-hourly metered sites. Valda is worth a quote if you're a sole trader or small business looking for a simple prepay tariff.
This business energy comparison looks at tariffs, contract length, pricing structure, renewable credentials, customer service, smart tech and fees. We checked both suppliers' published terms, tariff pages and independent ratings so you don't have to.

Which Supplier Offers Better Tariffs?
Neither Valda nor Yu publishes a fixed rate card for new business customers, because pricing depends on:
Business location
Annual consumption
Industry type
Meter type
Contract length
Credit profile
Regional distribution charges
It's worth noting that the two suppliers structure their ranges quite differently. Valda keeps things simple: one core prepay product, a no-standing-charge variant, and an optional renewable add-on. Yu offers a wider menu that scales from a micro-business online quote through to bespoke pass-through pricing for half-hourly metered sites.
Is Valda's Electricity Really 100% Renewable?
Some third-party guides describe Valda as supplying "100% renewable electricity as standard." We found that this overstates the position on Valda's own pages. Valda Renewable is presented as an add-on: new customers can join it directly, but existing customers move onto it by accepting a small uplift on their agreed unit rate, and it's marketed alongside, not built into, Valda's core SmartChoice tariff. If a renewable claim matters to your decision, ask Valda to confirm in writing whether the quote you're given already includes Valda Renewable or whether it's a separate uplift.
Valda Tariffs
Valda SmartChoice
Valda's core product. Rather than a monthly or quarterly bill, you top up your account in advance and pay for electricity or gas as you use it, tracked through a smart meter and the Valda app. Valda says there are no security deposits and no added charges for paying by bank card or Direct Debit.
Best for:
Sole traders and small businesses that want to avoid a large lump-sum bill
Businesses that prefer to manage energy spend little and often
Sites under Valda's roughly £30k-a-year or 100,000 kWh electricity ceiling
Valda SmartChoice Zero
Works the same way as standard SmartChoice, but without a separate daily standing charge on gas or electricity. That fixed cost moves into the unit rate instead, so you only pay for what you use. Valda says you need to be a new customer, or an existing customer renewing, on a 1, 2 or 3-year fixed term, with annual consumption of 5,000 kWh or more.
Best for:
Seasonal businesses, such as a Christmas shop or a seaside café
Sites that are closed or lightly used for parts of the year
Valda Renewable
An add-on that supplies 100% renewable electricity, sourced through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with UK wind, solar and hydro generators. Valda plants two native trees annually, through its Stump Up For Trees partnership, for every meter point on the tariff.
Best for:
Sustainability-focused small businesses that want a straightforward green option layered onto a simple prepay tariff
Yu Tariffs
Fix
An all-inclusive fixed price for unit rates and standing charges over the whole contract, for gas and electricity meters that aren't half-hourly. Micro-businesses can get an instant online quote for gas consumption up to 73,200 kWh.
Best for:
SMEs that want a straightforward, all-in fixed price with no surprises
Multi-Fuel Fix
A discounted rate for businesses that switch two or more utilities, such as electricity and gas, or electricity and water, to Yu at the same time.
Best for:
Businesses that want one supplier, one point of contact and a lower combined rate across utilities
Pre-Pay
For sites with a conventional, non-half-hourly prepayment meter, letting you top up and manage usage as you go.
Best for:
Businesses that inherited or need a prepayment meter and want to stay on that model
Freedom
A flexible tariff with no fixed end date and a 30-day notice period to leave. Prices are fixed but reviewed periodically, and Yu emails customers in advance of any change. It's also the plan you land on by default if a fixed contract ends without a renewal being agreed.
Best for:
Businesses that want to avoid being tied into a fixed term, or are deciding on their next move
Pure Green
An optional 100% renewable electricity plan, generated by Carno Wind Farm in Powys, Wales and certified by Ofgem Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs), paired with carbon-neutral gas backed by offsetting. Available as a 12, 24 or 36-month fixed add-on. One third-party review reports it carries no exit fees, though we couldn't confirm this directly on Yu's own pages, so ask Yu to confirm before you rely on it.
Best for:
Businesses that want a verified renewable claim without switching their whole tariff structure
HH Fix, Pass Through, Renewable Pass Through, Cost Manager Pass Through
Bespoke products for larger, half-hourly metered businesses, where some or all non-commodity costs move with the market rather than being fixed for the term.
Best for:
Larger sites and I&C customers with more complex usage profiles
Tariff Comparison Table
Tariff Type | Valda | Yu |
|---|---|---|
Fixed Rate | Yes, 1, 2 or 3 years | Yes, 1, 2 or 3 years |
Flexible/Out-of-Contract Rate | No dedicated flexible tariff | Yes, the Freedom plan |
Prepayment | Yes, standard across the range | Yes, on the Pre-Pay plan |
No Standing Charge Option | Yes, SmartChoice Zero | Not published as a distinct product |
Renewable Electricity | Add-on, Valda Renewable | Add-on, Pure Green |
Multi-Utility Discount | No | Yes, Multi-Fuel Fix |
Half-Hourly and Large Business Products | Not typically offered | Yes, HH Fix, Pass Through and Cost Manager Pass Through |
Water Supply | No | Yes |
Winner: Yu, for the breadth of its range and its support for larger and half-hourly metered sites. Valda is the stronger fit if you're a sole trader or small business that wants a simple prepay tariff and doesn't need the extra product choice.
How Do Contract Lengths Compare?
Valda Contract Terms
Contract Type | Typical Length |
|---|---|
SmartChoice / SmartChoice Zero | 1, 2 or 3 years, fixed |
Valda Renewable | Matches the fixed term |
Deemed Rates | No fixed term, applies until a contract is agreed |
Yu Contract Terms
Contract Type | Typical Length |
|---|---|
Fix / Multi-Fuel Fix | 1, 2 or 3 years |
Pure Green | 1, 2 or 3 years |
Freedom | No fixed end date, 30 days' notice to leave |
Large Business (HH Fix, Pass Through) | Bespoke |
Deemed or Transition Rates | No fixed term |
Contract Length Scorecard
Factor | Valda | Yu |
|---|---|---|
Short-Term Flexibility | Limited, fixed terms only | Good, the Freedom plan carries no fixed term |
Long-Term Fixed Procurement | Good, up to 3 years | Good, up to 3 years, or bespoke for larger sites |
Renewal Notice | Valda's Renewals Team contacts customers ahead of the end date, no set number of days published | 60 days before the end date, with a renewal reminder |
Early Exit | No published formula. Contracts have no cooling-off period | No published formula on most tariffs. Non-microbusiness accounts need 30 days' notice to leave at term end |
Yu's rules differ by business size. If you're a microbusiness, defined as fewer than 10 employees and turnover or a balance sheet under £1.7 million, you no longer have to give 30 days' notice to end a fixed contract at its natural end date. Every other business does, or risks rolling onto Yu's Extended Supply Rates, which Yu says are likely to cost more. Valda doesn't publish an equivalent microbusiness carve-out, and neither supplier publishes a fixed exit-fee formula the way some larger suppliers do, so ask either one for the exact figure in writing before you sign.
Valda vs Yu Pricing Structure
Business energy quotes typically include:
Unit Rate
The price charged for each kWh you use. Neither supplier publishes fixed business rates online, so a live quote is the only reliable comparison. Valda generates quotes individually, based on location, meter type and consumption, through its sales team or a broker. Yu offers an instant online quote for smaller, non-half-hourly gas meters, but larger and half-hourly sites go through a bespoke quote process.
Standing Charge
The daily fee covering network connection and administration. Valda applies a standing charge on its standard SmartChoice tariff but removes it entirely on SmartChoice Zero. Yu sets its standing charge per quote on Fix and Multi-Fuel Fix, with the equivalent cost folded into pass-through pricing on its larger-business products.
Pass-Through Charges
May include:
Network costs, as explained in our guide to pass-through and fully fixed energy contracts
Balancing charges
Government levies
It's worth noting that Yu's website carries a dedicated FAQ on Transmission Network Use of System (TNUoS) charges, which suggests these costs can still reach Yu customers even on fixed products. Valda doesn't publish an equivalent page, so ask directly whether your quoted price is fixed or whether regulated charges like TNUoS can still be passed through.
Advance Payments and Credit Checks
Neither supplier publishes a standard advance payment or deposit requirement in the pages we reviewed. Both apply a credit check, and Valda's prepayment model means you're effectively paying in advance for usage throughout the contract rather than as a one-off deposit.
VAT
Both suppliers quote prices excluding VAT. Most businesses pay 20% VAT on energy, and those using under 33 kWh of electricity or 145 kWh of gas a day can qualify for the reduced 5% rate with a declaration.
Pricing Transparency Comparison
Area | Valda | Yu |
|---|---|---|
Online Quote | Limited, mostly sales-led | Yes for smaller non-HH gas meters, bespoke for larger sites |
Fixed Rate Card | No | No |
Out-of-Contract Rates Published | Deemed rates published, effective dates stated | Deemed and Transition rate schedules published |
Advance Payment | Not published, prepayment is core to the model | Not published |
Sold Through Brokers | Yes | Yes, including third-party intermediaries |
Winner: Yu edges ahead for smaller, non-half-hourly gas meters, where its online quote tool gives an instant figure. When we speak to business owners, we find the gap between two live quotes for the same site is usually wider than the gap between any two brands, which is why we'd always collect at least three before deciding.
Which Supplier Has Better Renewable Energy Credentials?
Both suppliers take the same broad approach: renewable electricity as a paid add-on rather than as standard, backed by a specific, traceable claim rather than an unbundled certificate.
Valda Sustainability Initiatives
Offers:
Valda Renewable, sourced through PPAs with UK wind, solar and hydro generators
Free smart meter installation as standard, giving real-time usage visibility
A partnership with Stump Up For Trees, planting two native trees a year per meter point on the renewable tariff
Pros
Renewable sourcing is traced to UK generators through direct PPAs, rather than bought as separate certificates
Real-time usage data through the app helps businesses see the effect of changes straight away
A clear, single sustainability product rather than a confusing tariff book
Cons
Renewable electricity is an uplift on top of the standard price, not included by default
Valda doesn't publish detailed fuel mix data as prominently as larger suppliers, making it harder to independently benchmark
Yu Sustainability Initiatives
Offers:
Pure Green, 100% renewable electricity traced to Carno Wind Farm and certified by Ofgem REGOs, paired with carbon-neutral gas backed by offsetting
A Plant a Tree carbon-offsetting commitment with the World Land Trust
EV charge points and Power Purchase Agreement support for businesses generating their own renewable power
Pros
A named, traceable generation source (Carno Wind Farm) rather than a generic renewable claim
Broader additional services, including EV charging and PPA support, for businesses further along their sustainability journey
Available across a wider range of business sizes than Valda's renewable option
Cons
Yu's standard, non-Pure Green fuel mix leans heavily on natural gas and some coal, so the green claim depends entirely on choosing the add-on
Some independent analysis puts Yu's standard-mix CO2 emissions above the UK supplier average, which is worth asking about directly if sustainability reporting matters to your business
Sustainability Comparison
Renewable Category | Valda | Yu |
|---|---|---|
Standard Electricity Offer | Not renewable by default | Not renewable by default |
Renewable Add-On | Valda Renewable, PPA-sourced | Pure Green, REGO-certified, traced to Carno Wind Farm |
Gas Decarbonisation | Not offered | Carbon-neutral gas via offsetting on Pure Green |
Tree Planting / Offset Scheme | Stump Up For Trees | World Land Trust Plant a Tree |
EV Charging | Not offered | Yes |
On-Site Generation Support | Not offered | PPA support for business generators |
Winner: Yu, for the breadth of its sustainability offer, including carbon-neutral gas and EV charging alongside its renewable electricity add-on. Valda's PPA-sourced electricity is a fair, straightforward claim for a small business that only needs one simple green product. Our renewable business energy guide covers the wider market in more detail.
Customer Service Comparison
Customer support can have a major impact on small businesses when problems arise. It's worth noting that neither Valda nor Yu has a meaningful domestic customer base, so unlike household-facing suppliers, neither appears in Citizens Advice's or Ofgem's household supplier ratings. Trustpilot, which both suppliers actively invite reviews to, is the main independent measure available here, and it should be read with that context in mind.
Valda Business Support
Channels include:
Telephone support, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm on Valda's general line, and 9 am to 5.30 pm on its dedicated contracts team
An online contact form and live chat via the Valda website
Self-service account management and real-time usage tracking through the Valda app
Strengths
A Trustpilot rating of around 4.3 out of 5 from more than 6,300 reviews, as of September 2026
Valda says it replies to the large majority of negative reviews, typically within a week
A UK-based team focused solely on small business queries, with many reviews naming individual advisers positively
Weaknesses
No published email address, so contact relies on phone, form or live chat
Phone support is limited to weekday office hours
A recurring minority of reviews flag billing accuracy, meter reads and account-transfer delays
Yu Business Support
Channels include:
Telephone support, an online contact form and live chat
A dedicated Business Renewals Team and a Change of Tenancy team
My Account online portal for bills and usage
Strengths
A track record of positive one-to-one service, with many reviews naming individual advisers for resolving specific problems
Multi-utility account management, covering electricity, gas and water queries in one place
A structured 60-day renewal notice period, ahead of contract end dates
Weaknesses
A Trustpilot rating of around 3.7 out of 5, rated "Average," from more than 7,500 reviews, as of September 2026, down from a "Great" rating of around 3.8 out of 5 in January 2026
Recurring complaints about long call-wait times, disputed or estimated bills, and slow resolution of change-of-tenancy and meter issues
Larger I&C customers can't use the Energy Ombudsman and must pursue complaints through commercial dispute resolution instead
Customer Service Scorecard
Area | Valda | Yu |
|---|---|---|
Trustpilot Rating | Around 4.3 out of 5 | Around 3.7 out of 5, "Average" |
Trustpilot Review Volume | Over 6,300 | Over 7,500 |
Complaint Route for Microbusinesses | Energy Ombudsman | Energy Ombudsman |
Complaint Route for Larger Businesses | Not applicable, SME focus only | Commercial dispute resolution |
Account Management | Phone, form, live chat, app | Phone, online chat, dedicated teams, portal |
Digital Services | Good, app-based real-time tracking | Good, online portal |
Citizens Advice Business Rating | Not rated | Not rated |
In our experience, billing accuracy is the recurring theme worth weighing most heavily across both suppliers' recent reviews. When we speak to business owners who've had a poor run with a supplier, we find that disputed balances, slow meter fixes and unclear figures at renewal come up more often than the headline unit rate. Yu's review volume has grown fastest in 2026, but its rating has also slipped over the same period, which is worth factoring in alongside the headline number.
How Do Smart Meters and Tech Compare?
Valda Technology Solutions
A smart meter is required on almost all Valda accounts, installed free of charge once you're on supply
Real-time usage and credit tracking through the Valda app, built around its prepayment model
Online account management for topping up, viewing bills and updating details
New Connections for premises without an existing supply, and Unmetered Supply for sites such as street lighting
Ideal For
Sole traders and small businesses that want to see spend as it happens
Businesses that prefer paying as they go over receiving a lump-sum bill
Yu Technology Solutions
A required smart meter, installed free of charge once on supply. Yu may apply its Smart Default Rate or Freedom Rate if you don't permit installation
My Account online portal for bills, usage and payment history
EV charge point installation and Power Purchase Agreement support for businesses generating their own renewable power
Multi-utility account management spanning electricity, gas and water
Ideal For
Businesses that want one supplier managing multiple utilities and services
Sites planning EV charging or on-site generation alongside their energy contract
Technology Comparison
Feature | Valda | Yu |
|---|---|---|
Smart Meters | Required, free installation | Required, free installation |
Usage Tracking | Real-time via app, tied to prepayment | Online portal |
EV Tools | Not offered | Charge point installation |
On-Site Generation Support | Not offered | PPA support |
Multi-Utility Management | No, energy only | Yes, electricity, gas and water |
Multi-Site Monitoring | Limited | Yes, including large portfolios |
Winner: Yu, for the scope of its technology and utility offer, particularly for businesses that want EV charging or on-site generation support alongside their energy contract. Valda's real-time app tracking is a strength for a small business focused on managing day-to-day spend rather than infrastructure projects.
Business Energy Charges
Additional fees can apply with both Yu and Valda.
Common Charges
Fee Type | Valda | Yu |
|---|---|---|
Standing Charge | Yes, or £0 on SmartChoice Zero | Yes, set per quote |
Exit Fee on Fixed Contracts | Not published as a fixed formula | Not published as a fixed formula on most tariffs. Pure Green reportedly carries none |
Advance Payment or Deposit | Not published; prepayment is core to the model | Not published |
Late Payment | May affect prepay balance and credit terms | Administration costs described in Yu's terms as a estimate of its costs, not a penalty |
Renewal Notice | Contacted ahead of the end date by Valda's Renewals Team, no set number of days stated | 60 days before the end date |
Out-of-Contract Rates | Deemed rates, published with effective dates | Deemed or Transition rates, published as PDF schedules |
Cooling-Off Period | None | Not stated in the pages we reviewed |
Other Pass-Through Costs | Not published in detail | TNUoS and other regulated charges may still apply |
Key Consideration
Businesses should avoid rolling onto out-of-contract or deemed rates, which are typically far more expensive than a fixed contract, whichever supplier you choose. Valda says it may offer up to 90 days of backbilling if you've missed a renewal date and ended up on its out-of-contract rates, which is worth asking about if you've drifted onto deemed pricing. Neither supplier lists a cooling-off period in the pages we reviewed, which is standard practice across UK business energy rather than specific to either brand.
Pros and Cons of Valda
Advantages
Built for Small Businesses
Valda's entire product range, from its tariff structure to its app, is designed around sole traders and SMEs rather than adapted from a large corporate offer.
Prepayment Keeps Bills Predictable
Topping up in advance suits businesses that want to avoid a large, unexpected invoice and prefer to manage energy spend closely.
Strong Independent Rating
A Trustpilot score of around 4.3 out of 5 from over 6,300 reviews, ahead of Yu's score in the same period.
Free Smart Meter and Real-Time App Tracking
Businesses can see usage and spend as it happens, rather than waiting for a bill.
Disadvantages
No Flexible or No-Fixed-Term Tariff
Unlike Yu's Freedom plan, Valda doesn't currently offer a variable tariff with no set end date.
Capped Business Size
Valda's SME-only focus, typically up to around £30k a year or under 100,000 kWh of electricity, means larger or multi-site organisations will need to look elsewhere.
No Water or Multi-Utility Offering
Businesses wanting one supplier for energy and water will need to look at Yu or another multi-utility provider instead.
Renewable Electricity Costs Extra
Valda Renewable is an uplift on the standard price, not included by default.
Pros and Cons of Yu
Advantages
Serves the Widest Range of Business Sizes
From an instant online quote for a micro-business gas meter through to bespoke half-hourly pricing for large I&C sites.
Multi-Utility Offering
Electricity, gas and water under one supplier, with a Multi-Fuel Fix discount for bundling utilities.
Flexible Exit Option
The Freedom plan carries no fixed end date and a 30-day notice period to leave.
Broader Sustainability and Tech Toolkit
Pure Green's traceable renewable electricity, carbon-neutral gas, EV charging and PPA support for on-site generation.
Disadvantages
Declining Independent Rating
A Trustpilot score of around 3.7 out of 5, "Average," as of September 2026, down from a "Great" rating of around 3.8 out of 5 in January the same year.
Recurring Billing Complaints
A notable share of recent reviews describe disputed balances, estimated bills and slow resolution times.
Complaint Route Splits by Business Size
Larger I&C customers can't use the Energy Ombudsman and must pursue disputes commercially instead.
Renewable Electricity Costs Extra
As with Valda, Pure Green is an add-on rather than the default supply.

Key Questions to Ask Before Deciding
Before signing a business energy contract, compare:
Does the supplier serve your business size, or is one of them SME-only?
Is the price fully fixed, or can charges such as TNUoS still be passed through?
What is the standing charge, and is there a no-standing-charge option?
Is renewable electricity included, or is it a paid add-on?
What is the exit fee, and can you leave without notice on any tariff?
What happens at contract renewal, and how much notice will you get?
Can your premises take a smart meter, and what happens if you decline one?
Do you need water supply alongside gas and electricity?
Will your complaint go through the Energy Ombudsman?
What do independent sources say about its service?
Valda vs Yu Business Energy FAQs
Is Valda or Yu cheaper for business energy?
Neither publishes a fixed rate card. Both price each contract by postcode, usage, meter type, contract length and credit profile. The only reliable comparison is live quotes for your own site, ideally from both suppliers and at least one other.
Does Valda offer pay-as-you-go for business?
Yes. Prepayment is core to Valda's SmartChoice range, letting you top up in advance and track usage through the app. Yu also offer a Pre-Pay plan for conventional, non-half-hourly prepayment meters.
Is Valda's electricity 100% renewable?
No. Not by default anyway. Valda Renewable is an optional add-on, sourced through Power Purchase Agreements with UK wind, solar and hydro generators, applied as an uplift on the standard price.
Does Yu supply business water?
Yes. Yu offers a multi-utility service covering electricity, gas and water, with a Multi-Fuel Fix discount for businesses that switch two or more utilities to Yu at once.
Do Valda and Yu require a smart meter?
Both do, on almost all accounts, and both install one free of charge once you're on supply. Yu says it may move you onto a Smart Default Rate or its Freedom Rate if you don't allow installation.
Do Valda and Yu charge exit fees?
Yes. Neither publishes a fixed exit-fee formula for most of their tariffs in the pages we reviewed. One third-party review describes Yu's Pure Green tariff as carrying no exit fees, though we couldn't confirm this directly on Yu's own pages, so ask either supplier for the exact figure and how it's calculated before you sign.
Does Yu or Valda have better customer service?
On Trustpilot, Valda scores higher, at around 4.3 out of 5 against Yu's roughly 3.7 out of 5, rated "Average," as of September 2026. Yu's rating has fallen over the course of 2026, alongside a growing volume of reviews. Neither supplier is covered by Citizens Advice's household ratings, since neither sells to domestic customers.
Can large businesses use Valda?
No. Valda is built for sole traders and SMEs, typically up to around £30k a year or under 100,000 kWh of electricity.

Verdict: Valda or Yu for Business Energy?
Choose Valda if you want:
A simple prepay tariff built specifically for sole traders and small businesses
A no-standing-charge option for seasonal or low-usage sites
Real-time smart meter tracking through an app
The stronger independent review score of the two, at the time of writing
Choose Yu if you want:
A supplier that scales from micro-business to large I&C, including half-hourly metered sites
Energy and water under one contract, with a discount for bundling utilities
A flexible tariff with no fixed end date
Traceable renewable electricity, carbon-neutral gas and EV charging alongside your energy contract
For most firms beyond the very smallest, Yu's broader range and multi-utility offer make it the more practical starting point, particularly if you have more than one site or a half-hourly meter. Valda's case rests on doing one thing well: a simple, jargon-light prepay tariff for a sole trader or small business that doesn't want, or need, a bigger supplier's full product book.
When we speak to business owners weighing the two up, the decision usually comes down to scale first, and service record second. Yu's Trustpilot score has slipped while its review volume has grown, which is worth watching if you're choosing it for a multi-year contract. Either way, get live quotes before you sign, and check both suppliers' current terms directly since fees and eligibility criteria change. Our business energy comparison tool can help you set either quote against the wider market.
