Most sole traders and small company directors know the Monzo name, often because it's their personal bank. That familiarity is both Monzo Business's biggest advantage and the reason many owners skip doing their homework. It's easy to assume the business account works exactly like the personal one, and that the free plan will cover everything.
In our experience, the question isn't whether Monzo Business is good. It usually is. The real question is whether your business fits the account's eligibility rules, cash limits and plan structure. A sole trader who's paid by bank transfer can run on the free plan for years. A limited company that handles a lot of cash, trades internationally or is set up as an LLP will run into limits quickly.
This review covers what Monzo Business offers UK sole traders and small businesses, how the Lite, Pro and Team plans compare, what it costs in practice, how safe your money is, and which businesses it suits best.
TLDR: Is Monzo Business Worth It?
For most UK sole traders and small limited companies that bank digitally, yes. Monzo Business is a fully licensed UK bank with FSCS protection. Its free Lite plan includes instant UK transfers and Making Tax Digital software. In a February 2026 independent service quality survey, it ranked first among business current account providers for overall service quality, with 85% of customers saying they would recommend it.
Best for: sole traders and limited companies that are paid by card or bank transfer, want a strong app, and need little or no cash handling.
Think twice if: you're an LLP, partnership or charity (you can't apply). You might also struggle if you deposit more than a few thousand pounds in cash a month, need to hold foreign currencies, or want invoicing and accounting integrations without paying £9 a month.
The plan most need: Lite if you only need a current account. Pro if you want invoicing, Tax Pots and accounting integrations. Team only once several people need cards and spending controls.

What is Monzo Business?
Monzo is a UK digital bank founded in 2015. It launched its business accounts in 2020. Today, Monzo Business has passed one million business customers and made up 14% of Monzo's £1.7bn revenue in its 2026 annual report, up from 12% the year before.
The business account is run by the same regulated entity as Monzo's personal accounts. Monzo Bank Limited is registered in England and Wales (company number 09446231), authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and regulated by both the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the PRA, with Financial Services Register number 730427.
That's an important distinction from several fintech names Monzo is often compared against. Tide and ANNA, for example, are electronic money institutions (EMIs), which safeguard your money rather than offering deposit protection.
At its core, Monzo Business lets you:
Open a UK business current account from your phone, usually on the same day
Send and receive UK payments instantly at no cost
Ring-fence money for tax, bills and savings using Pots
File to HMRC through built-in Making Tax Digital software, even on the free plan
Upgrade to paid plans for invoicing, accounting integrations and team spending controls
When we speak to sole traders who've chosen Monzo, the reason they give most often is the app. That matches the independent data. In the same February 2026 survey, Monzo also ranked first for online and mobile banking services among business current accounts, at 90%.
How Does Monzo Business Work?
Lite, Pro and Team Plans
Every Monzo Business account starts on the free Lite plan, and you can upgrade to Pro or Team. Unlike Zempler, where tiers are set by how many payments you make, Monzo's plans are split by features. UK transfers are free and unlimited on all three plans. What changes is the admin and team tooling.
Lite costs £0 a month. It covers the current account, debit card, free instant UK transfers, payment links, cash and cheque deposits, digital receipts, Instant Access Savings Pots and Making Tax Digital software.
Pro costs £9 a month, with the first month free. It adds invoicing, Tax Pots, auto-exports, virtual cards, custom categories, connected accounts and integrated accounting.
Team starts at £25 a month. It adds expense cards, payment approvals, bulk payments and support for a larger team.
The £9 Pro price applies to newer accounts only. Monzo's fee document lists Pro at £9 a month for accounts opened on or after 26 November 2024, and £5 a month for accounts opened before that date. If you've seen £5 quoted elsewhere, that's why.
Who Can Apply?
Monzo's eligibility rules are narrower than many owners expect. You can apply if you're a sole trader or the director of a limited company by shares, based in the UK and aged at least 16. Limited companies also have to meet these conditions:
An active status on Companies House, as Monzo can't support dormant companies
An active, non-disqualified director
Income mainly from selling goods or services, not from interest or investments
UK tax residency only
Monzo can't support partnerships (including LLPs), companies limited by guarantee, charities, community interest companies (CICs), PLCs, clubs or trusts. You also can't apply if your business is based, registered or tax resident outside the UK, and Monzo asks that you're in the UK and not using a VPN when you apply.
Monzo also lists industries it won't support, regardless of your business type. These include money services and currency exchange, gambling, precious metals and jewellery, used vehicles, CBD products, and consumer credit or lending.
In our experience, owners who end up frustrated with Monzo are usually the ones who didn't check this list before applying. If your company is an LLP, or you sell used cars, you'll need to look elsewhere. Our Starling vs Lloyds comparison covers two providers that accept LLPs.
How Fast is Account Opening?
Fast, for most applicants. Monzo publishes its account opening times as part of its FCA disclosures. Once it has all the information it needs, Monzo gives 95% of business customers an account number on the same day, and debit cards arrive in two days on average.
Why Monzo is Popular With Sole Traders and SMEs
Making Tax Digital on the Free Plan
Monzo describes Lite as a free business account that files directly to HMRC and is ready for Making Tax Digital. That matters more in 2026 than it did a year ago. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax now requires many sole traders to keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC. Previously, most needed separate software to do that.
Getting compliant software inside a free bank account is a real saving. Our guide to business bank accounts with Making Tax Digital software compares how other providers handle it.
Tax and Savings Pots
Pots are one of the features Monzo customers mention most. Instant Access Savings Pots are available on every plan. Tax Pots, which automatically set aside a percentage of incoming tax payments, come with Pro and Team.
The feature is widely used. Monzo says its business customers have collectively set aside nearly £7 billion in Tax Pots and saved over £4 billion in Instant Access Savings Pots.
When we speak to newly self-employed sole traders, a surprise tax bill is one of their biggest worries. Tax Pots don't do your tax return for you, but they make it much harder to spend money that was never really yours.
Highly-Rated App
Monzo's rankings in the independent service quality surveys are consistent. The August 2026 results again put Monzo top for overall service quality across both personal and business current accounts in Great Britain.
These surveys measure whether customers would recommend their bank. They don't measure fees or features. Even so, consistent first-place results over several rounds are hard to ignore.
Key Features of Monzo Business Accounts

Monzo Business Pricing Structure
Monzo's pricing splits into three areas: the monthly plan fee, payment and international charges, and cash handling costs.
Plan Fees
This plan table reflects Monzo's published plans and fee document as of October 2026. On Team, each team member after the first six costs £5 a month.
Feature | Lite | Pro | Team |
|---|---|---|---|
Monthly fee | £0 | £9 (first month free) | From £25 |
Free instant UK transfers | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Making Tax Digital software | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Instant Access Savings Pots | Yes | Yes | Yes |

Team access levels | No | Yes | Yes |
Expense cards | No | No | Yes |
Payment approvals | No | No | Yes |
Bulk payments | No | No | Yes |
Extra team members | N/A | N/A | £5 a month each after the first six |
Payment and Transaction Fees
Service | Cost |
|---|---|
Sending and receiving GBP within the UK | Free on all plans |
Direct Debits and Standing Orders | Free on all plans |
Receiving foreign currency | 1% conversion fee, capped at £1,000 per payment |
Sending money abroad | Fixed plus variable fee, shown in the app before you send |
Cash withdrawals outside the EEA | First £200 free in a rolling 30 days, then 3% |
Refused or allowed payments when funds are short | £0 |
On international payments, Monzo is built around sterling. The account only holds GBP, and outbound international transfers run through an integration with Wise. Payments that arrive in other supported currencies are converted to pounds with a 1% fee, capped at £1,000 per transaction, and the fee for sending abroad is a fixed amount plus a variable amount that depends on the destination and currency.
Cash and Cheque Deposits
Monzo charges £1 for each cash deposit at PayPoint or the Post Office, to cover what those partners charge Monzo. The bigger constraint is the cap. Sole traders can deposit up to £3,000 a month, with £5 to £3,000 per Post Office deposit and £5 to £300 at PayPoint. Limited companies can deposit up to £10,000 a month, with £5 to £4,000 per Post Office deposit and £5 to £300 at PayPoint.
For cheques, you can pay in cheques up to £500 through the app, and cheques above £500 need to be sent by post.
What Do You Actually Pay Each Month?
We worked through some common business patterns using Monzo's published fees. The results show that "free" holds true for many businesses, but not all of them.
Business pattern | Plan | Estimated cost |
|---|---|---|
Sole trader paid by card and bank transfer, no cash | Lite | £0 |
Sole trader paying in cash once a week | Lite | £4 (4 deposits at £1) |
Freelancer who invoices clients and uses Tax Pots | Pro | £9 (first month free) |
Freelancer on Pro receiving the equivalent of £2,000 a month in euros | Pro | £29 (£9 plus about £20 in conversion fees) |
Limited company with six people needing cards and approvals | Team | £25 |
Limited company with 10 team members | Team | £45 (£25 plus four extra members at £5) |
Estimates calculated from Monzo's published fees, October 2026. Excludes loan or overdraft interest and international sending fees.
Over a full year, Pro costs £99 in year one because the first month is free, then £108 a year after that. That's the amount to weigh against standalone invoicing or bookkeeping software. If you already pay for Xero, you might decide the integration is worth it. If you don't, a free account with accounting software built in, such as Mettle with FreeAgent, could work out cheaper.
How Does Monzo Compare on Cash Handling?
This is where Monzo surprises people. It charges less per deposit than many digital rivals, but its monthly limits are much lower.
Provider | Cost of a £1,000 cash deposit | Monthly or annual limit |
|---|---|---|
Monzo | £1 | £3,000 a month (sole traders), £10,000 a month (limited companies) |
Starling | £7 (0.7%, £3 minimum) | £100,000 a year |
Zempler | £5.50 (0.55%, £4 minimum) | £6,000 a day |
The result is that Monzo is the cheapest of the three for occasional cash. A café or market trader taking a few thousand pounds in cash each week, though, will hit Monzo's monthly cap long before month end. Our guide to small business bank accounts covers providers built for heavier cash use.
Can You Borrow With Monzo Business?
Yes, but what's available depends on your business type.
Sole traders can borrow in two ways:
Loans of £200 to £25,000. Monzo's representative APR is 19.9% for loans over £10,000 and up to £25,000, and 29.3% for loans up to £10,000. Monzo doesn't charge for early repayment or late payments.
Overdrafts. Monzo's FCA disclosure lists arranged overdraft rates of 29% to 39% as of 30 June 2026, and notes that business overdrafts are only available to sole traders.
Limited companies have fewer options, but they do exist. Monzo advertises limited company loans of £500 to £35,000 at a representative APR of 33.1%. To apply, you need to have held a business account for at least 30 days and give a personal guarantee. If Monzo can't lend to you, it refers limited companies to iwoca and earns a commission from that partner.
These rates are higher than many secured or high street options. Monzo's borrowing works best as quick, flexible short-term finance, not as cheap long-term funding. If you're comparing options, our guide on whether sole traders are eligible for loans explains the wider market.
Is Monzo Business Safe to Use?
For a small business owner weighing up a digital bank against a high street name, this is often the first question.
FCA and PRA Authorisation
Monzo Bank Limited:
Company number: 09446231
Financial Services Register number: 730427
Authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the PRA
Holds a full UK banking licence
FSCS Protection
Because Monzo is a licensed bank and not an e-money institution, eligible deposits are protected by the FSCS up to £120,000. That puts Monzo on the same footing as Starling, Lloyds or Barclays.
Feature | Monzo Business | Typical EMI |
|---|---|---|
FCA and PRA regulated | Yes | FCA-regulated only |
Full UK banking licence | Yes | No |
FSCS protection | Yes, up to £120,000 | No, safeguarding only |
Overdrafts and loans | Yes, subject to eligibility | Varies, often via partners |
The 2025 FCA Fine
Being honest about safety means covering the regulator's findings too. In July 2025, the FCA fined Monzo £21,091,300 for inadequate anti-financial crime systems and controls between October 2018 and August 2020. The FCA found that Monzo's onboarding, risk assessment and transaction monitoring failed to keep pace with its growth. The FCA also confirmed that Monzo has completed a programme to fix and strengthen its financial crime controls.
This fine doesn't affect your deposit protection. It does help explain why Monzo, like most banks, now carries out thorough identity and business checks, and why some customers report temporary account restrictions while checks take place.
Terms and Conditions to Check
Several parts of Monzo's terms are worth reading before you commit.
Eligibility excludes common business structures
Partnerships, LLPs, charities, CICs and companies limited by guarantee can't apply. Neither can businesses in several excluded industries. Check the full list before you start an application.
Cash deposit limits are monthly, not daily
At £3,000 a month for sole traders and £10,000 for limited companies, a cash-heavy business could reach the cap within a week or two.
GBP only
There are no foreign currency balances. Foreign payments you receive are converted to pounds at a 1% fee, so a business with regular overseas income pays that on every payment.
Invoicing and accounting integrations aren't free
They start at £9 a month on Pro. If those tools are why you're choosing Monzo, budget £108 a year for them.
Overdrafts are for sole traders only
Limited companies can apply for a loan, but not a business overdraft.
What is Monzo Business Good At?
Free everyday banking that stays free
Instant UK transfers, Direct Debits and Standing Orders cost nothing on any plan, with no payment allowance to watch.
Service and app quality
Monzo has ranked first among business current account providers in the independent service quality surveys, including both 2026 rounds.
Making Tax Digital on the free plan
Sole traders get HMRC-ready software without paying for a subscription.
Cheap occasional cash deposits
£1 per deposit is cheaper than percentage-based charges for small and medium deposits.
Fast account opening
Most applicants get an account number on the same day.
Who is Monzo Business Best Suited To?
Monzo Business is particularly suited to:
Sole traders and freelancers who bank digitally
If you're paid by card or bank transfer and want an app that makes tax and budgeting easier, Lite covers most of what you need for free.
Sole traders preparing for MTD
Built-in MTD software on the free plan is a strong reason to choose Monzo over accounts that charge for it.
Small limited companies with modest admin needs
Directors who want free UK payments, plus invoicing and accounting integrations through Pro when they need them.
Growing teams that need spending controls
Team's expense cards, payment approvals and bulk payments suit companies with several staff who spend on the business's behalf.
Businesses that handle a little cash
A flat £1 per deposit works well if cash is occasional, not daily.
If a polished app, free UK payments and strong service ratings matter more to you than multi-currency features or high cash limits, Monzo Business is one of the strongest options in the UK.
Who Would Be Better Served by Alternatives?
Monzo isn't the right fit for every business. Several situations call for something else.
You're a partnership, LLP or charity
You can't open a Monzo Business account. Our Starling vs Lloyds comparison covers providers that accept LLPs and partnerships.
You handle a lot of cash
Monzo's monthly caps make it a poor fit for cash-heavy businesses. A high street bank with branch or Post Office access will usually serve you better. Our Monzo vs Barclays comparison looks at that trade-off in detail.
You trade internationally
Monzo only holds pounds and charges 1% to convert incoming foreign payments. Our Monzo vs Wise comparison and Airwallex review cover platforms built for cross-border payments.
You want free accounting software built in
Monzo's integrations start at £9 a month. Mettle includes FreeAgent at no extra cost. See our Monzo vs Mettle comparison.
You've been turned down or have a thin credit history
Our Zempler Bank review covers a licensed bank that doesn't run a credit check on application.
Common Misconceptions About Monzo Business
"Monzo only lends to sole traders."
Not quite. Overdrafts are for sole traders only, but Monzo also advertises loans of £500 to £35,000 for eligible limited companies. You need to have held the account for 30 days and give a personal guarantee.
"Monzo Pro costs £5 a month."
Only for accounts opened before 26 November 2024. New Pro customers pay £9 a month after a free first month.
"Digital banks can't take cash."
Monzo accepts cash at PayPoint and the Post Office for £1 per deposit. It's the monthly cap, not the fee, that rules Monzo out for cash-heavy businesses.
"Any small business can open a Monzo Business account."
Only sole traders and limited companies by shares can apply. LLPs, partnerships, charities and CICs can't, and several industries are excluded.
"The free plan includes invoicing."
It doesn't. Invoicing, Tax Pots and accounting integrations all start on Pro.
What Real Customers Say About Monzo Business
Monzo has a Trustpilot TrustScore of 4.5 out of 5 from around 69,000 reviews, as of October 2026. Monzo has one Trustpilot profile covering both personal and business customers, so it isn't a business-only rating. For business-specific satisfaction, the CMA service quality results are a more reliable guide.
From the reviews we read, positive comments tend to mention the app, fast sign-up, budgeting and Pots, and helpful in-app chat support. Negative reviews tend to focus on accounts being frozen or restricted during security checks, and frustration about how long those reviews take. That pattern is common across UK digital banks, not unique to Monzo.

Verdict: Is Monzo Business a Good Option?
Monzo Business has earned its reputation. It's a fully licensed bank with FSCS protection. Its free plan includes instant UK transfers and MTD software. Its customers rate it more highly than any other business current account provider in the independent surveys. For a sole trader or small limited company that's paid digitally, Lite is one of the best free business accounts available in the UK.
The limits are clear, though. Partnerships, LLPs and charities can't apply. Cash deposits are capped at levels that rule out cash-heavy businesses. The account only holds pounds. Invoicing and accounting integrations sit behind a £9 monthly fee. Overdrafts are only available to sole traders, and Monzo's borrowing rates are higher than many traditional lenders.
In our experience, the businesses that get the most from Monzo start on Lite and only move to Pro once invoicing or Tax Pots would save them real time. If that sounds like your business, Monzo is a strong choice.
