Tide is an app-first fintech built for sole traders and limited company directors who want a free account with invoicing baked in. HSBC is one of the UK's oldest high street banks, offering branch access, a Post Office network, and lending solutions that a digital-only provider generally can't match.

One thing worth flagging before we go further: HSBC's app-only Kinetic account, which used to be the obvious comparison point against Tide, closed to new applications in April 2026 and stopped operating entirely in July 2026. If you've seen older comparisons pitching Tide against Kinetic, that account no longer exists for new customers. The account HSBC now offers new small businesses is the Small Business Banking Account, which is what we've compared here.

This guide compares Tide against HSBC's Small Business Banking Account on fees, features, eligibility and regulatory protection, so you can work out which one actually fits how your business runs.

Tide vs HSBC: At a Glance Comparison

Tide's Free plan costs nothing but starts charging 20p per transfer after the first five each month, which adds up quickly for a business making frequent payments. HSBC's Small Business Banking Account has no monthly fee at all and standard domestic transfers stay free regardless of volume, though CHAPS, international payments and cheques are charged separately.

What Tide Is Designed For

Tide is built for sole traders, freelancers and limited company directors who want to open an account from a phone, keep monthly costs low, and get invoicing and accounting integrations without paying for separate software.

Key Characteristics of Tide

  • Four account tiers, from a genuinely free Free plan through to Smart (£12.49 a month), Pro (£27.49 a month) and Max (£69.99 a month), each with a cheaper annual option

  • Invoicing included on every plan, with the number of free invoices increasing on paid tiers

  • Direct integrations with Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent and Sage on the free plan, with no need to upgrade for basic bookkeeping sync

  • New accounts hold customer funds with ClearBank, a fully licensed UK bank, which extends FSCS protection up to £120,000

  • A linked Tide Instant Saver account, with rates that scale by plan tier, from around 2.00% AER on Free up to as much as 3.75% to 4.38% AER on Max depending on the current rate card

  • 0% FX fees on card spending abroad from the Smart plan upward; the Free plan carries a 2.75% FX charge on overseas card transactions

  • A free company formation service when opening an account, useful for new limited companies starting from scratch

  • A Trustpilot rating of around 4.4 out of 5 from close to 37,000 reviews as of August 2026, with reviewers consistently praising the speed of account opening and the app's day-to-day usability

Trade-Offs to Consider

  • Tide is not a bank in its own right. It's an e-money institution, though new accounts benefit from FSCS protection because funds sit with ClearBank rather than Tide itself

  • Partnerships and LLPs cannot open a Tide account. Only sole traders, freelancers and limited company directors are eligible

  • No overdraft, no lending facility and no way to build a credit relationship through Tide itself

  • The Free plan only includes 5 free transfers a month before 20p-per-transfer charges apply, which suits low-volume businesses far better than high-volume ones

  • No branch network and no relationship manager, so anything requiring in-person support has to go through Tide's in-app chat or phone line

  • Cash deposits are possible through Post Office and PayPoint locations, but at a fee, and the account isn't designed around regular cash handling in the way a high street bank is

In our experience, Tide suits a business that wants to keep monthly costs close to zero, is comfortable managing everything from a phone, and doesn't need an overdraft or in-person banking support. For a closer look at how Tide compares against another fully digital challenger, our Tide vs Starling comparison is useful background, and our Tide vs Mettle comparison is worth a look if a permanently free account with bundled accounting software matters more to you than invoicing.

What HSBC Is Designed For

HSBC's Small Business Banking Account is built for UK businesses of any legal structure that want the option of branch access, in-person support, and a lending relationship that can grow alongside the business, without paying a monthly account fee to get it.

Key Characteristics of HSBC

  • No monthly account fee and free standard domestic digital transactions through Business Internet Banking and the HSBC UK Business Banking app

  • Open to all legal entities, including sole traders, limited companies, partnerships and LLPs, which is a wider eligibility net than Tide offers

  • Access to business borrowing solutions up to £100,000, subject to application, eligibility, affordability and credit checks, alongside Commercial Cards for employee spending

  • Support from Business Specialists, available virtually or in person, plus telephone banking, secure messaging and live chat for Business Internet Banking customers

  • Cash and cheque handling through HSBC branches and more than 11,500 Post Office branches, useful for businesses that regularly take cash

  • A Making Tax Digital-ready accounting tool built into the account, free for the first 12 months and then £5.99 plus VAT a month afterwards

  • Debit card payments are free, and multiple people can manage the account through desktop and mobile access

  • A Trustpilot rating of around 4.8 out of 5 from roughly 4,000 reviews as of mid-2026, with recurring praise for named relationship managers and business specialists who handle account switches and overdraft applications personally

Trade-Offs to Consider

  • Cash handling isn't free. Branch and Post Office counter transactions currently carry a £1.50 per-credit-or-withdrawal charge, and branch or Post Office cash in/out is charged at 1.5% of the value deposited or withdrawn, rising to 2% from 14 December 2026 for branch cash transactions

  • No invoicing tool is built into the core account, unlike Tide, where invoicing is standard on every plan

  • Borrowing above £100,000 requires moving to HSBC's Business Banking Account and being assigned a Relationship Manager, rather than being available within the Small Business Banking Account itself

  • HSBC's Business Price List is changing from 14 December 2026, and existing customers are being contacted individually between now and 14 October 2026, so current charges shown here should be checked against the live price list before publishing anything time-sensitive

  • Application requires more documentation upfront, including Companies House registration details for limited companies and partnerships, and estimated turnover, compared with Tide's largely automated phone-based onboarding

When we speak to SME lenders about high street versus digital banking, the deciding factor is usually whether a business expects to need lending or in-person support within the next year or two. If the answer is yes, HSBC's borrowing headroom and specialist access tend to outweigh Tide's lower day-to-day costs. Our Starling vs HSBC comparison is worth a look alongside this one if you're weighing HSBC against a different digital-first challenger.

How They Charge

Tide Pricing

The Free plan costs nothing but includes 5 free transfers in or out a month, after which each transfer costs 20p. Smart costs £12.49 a month (or £99.99 a year) and raises that allowance to 30 free transfers, plus 0% FX fees on card spending abroad. Pro costs £27.49 a month (or £219.99 a year) and removes the transfer cap entirely. Max costs £69.99 a month (or £559.92 a year) and adds 0.5% cashback on card spending along with the highest savings rate on the linked Instant Saver account. ATM withdrawals cost £1 on any plan. We checked Tide's published pricing in July 2026.

A business making fewer than five transfers a month, and happy to manage everything through the app, will find the Free plan genuinely free. Once transfer volume climbs past that, the maths shifts quickly towards Smart or Pro.

HSBC Pricing

The Small Business Banking Account has no monthly fee, and standard domestic digital transactions made through Business Internet Banking or the app are free. Cash handling is where the charges show up: branch and Post Office counter cash credits or withdrawals cost £1.50 each, cash deposited or withdrawn in branch is charged at 1.5% of value (2% from 14 December 2026), and Post Office cash in/out is charged at 1.5% of value. Mobile cheque deposits through the app cost 50p per cheque, with a £5,000 daily cap and a £2,000 limit per individual cheque. We confirmed these figures directly from HSBC's Small Business Banking Account page in August 2026, though HSBC has flagged further price changes taking effect from 14 December 2026.

A business that rarely handles cash and mostly pays and gets paid electronically will find HSBC's Small Business Banking Account effectively free on a day-to-day basis. A cash-heavy business, such as a café or a market trader, will want to model the percentage-based cash fees against Tide's flat per-deposit charge before deciding.

For more on how bundled accounting tools change the calculation across providers, our guide to business bank accounts with accounting covers the wider software side of the decision.

Feature Comparison: Tide vs HSBC

Payments and Transfers

Tide's transfer allowance scales with plan, from 5 free a month on Free to unlimited on Pro and Max, with 20p charged per transfer once the free allowance runs out. HSBC's standard domestic digital transactions are free regardless of volume on the Small Business Banking Account, though CHAPS, international payments and cheque-based transactions are charged separately.

Account Access

Tide is app-first, with a companion web platform for invoicing and accounting integrations, but no physical branch presence anywhere. HSBC offers desktop and mobile access through Business Internet Banking and the HSBC UK Business Banking app, plus branch and Post Office access for cash and cheque handling, and telephone banking for anyone who prefers speaking to someone directly.

Business Debit Cards

Tide issues a Mastercard debit card on every plan, with 0% FX fees on Smart, Pro and Max, and a 2.75% FX fee on the Free plan. HSBC's Business Debit Card payments are free, and Commercial Cards are available for employee spending at £32 a year after an initial 12-month free period.

Invoicing and Admin

Tide: Invoicing is included on every plan, with the free-invoice allowance increasing on paid tiers, and it's built around the same app that handles everyday banking.

HSBC: No invoicing tool is bundled into the Small Business Banking Account. Businesses that need invoicing will need a separate tool or accounting package, though HSBC's built-in accounting add-on covers Making Tax Digital compliance rather than client-facing invoicing.

Accounting and Tax Support

Tide: Connects directly with Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent and Sage on every plan, including the free tier, with no separate subscription needed for basic bank feed syncing.

HSBC: Connects with Xero and QuickBooks via Open Banking, and includes a Making Tax Digital-ready accounting tool built into the account, free for 12 months and then £5.99 plus VAT a month.

Overdraft and Lending

Tide: No overdraft or lending facility on any plan. Businesses that need borrowing will need to look elsewhere entirely.

HSBC: Business borrowing solutions up to £100,000 are accessible from within the Small Business Banking Account, subject to application, eligibility, affordability and credit checks. Businesses needing more than £100,000 move to HSBC's Business Banking Account, which comes with access to a dedicated Relationship Manager.

Savings

Tide: A linked Tide Instant Saver account, with rates that scale by current account plan, from around 2.00% AER on Free up to a higher rate on Max. The savings balance is FSCS-protected but shares the £120,000 limit with the current account rather than adding to it.

HSBC: HSBC offers separate business savings products alongside its current accounts. Rates and terms vary by product, so confirm the current rate directly with HSBC before relying on it.

Regulation and Protection

This is one area where Tide and HSBC end up more alike than the "fintech versus bank" framing suggests, though the mechanism differs.

HSBC UK Bank plc is a fully licensed UK bank, regulated by the Prudential Regulation Authority and the Financial Conduct Authority. Eligible deposits are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme up to £120,000.

Tide itself is an electronic money institution, not a bank, authorised by the FCA under the Electronic Money Regulations 2011. However, new Tide accounts hold customer funds with ClearBank Limited, which does hold a full UK banking licence, and this arrangement extends FSCS protection to eligible Tide balances up to £120,000. Some older Tide accounts, opened before the move to ClearBank, ran through Prepay Solutions and are safeguarded rather than FSCS-protected, so it's worth checking which arrangement applies if you're comparing an existing account rather than opening a new one.

Common Misconceptions About Tide and HSBC

"HSBC Kinetic is still HSBC's digital account for small businesses." Not any more. HSBC Kinetic closed to new applications on 2 April 2026 and stopped operating entirely on 1 July 2026. Existing Kinetic customers moved across to HSBC's standard business banking products; new customers now apply for the Small Business Banking Account instead.

"Tide isn't FSCS protected because it's not a bank." This is only partly true. Tide isn't a bank, but new accounts hold funds with ClearBank, a licensed bank, which extends FSCS protection up to £120,000, the same limit that applies to HSBC.

"HSBC business banking is free." Mostly for standard digital transactions. But cash handling carries percentage-based fees, and HSBC's Business Price List is changing from 14th December 2026, so it's worth checking the current fee schedule rather than assuming nothing has moved.

"You need to be a limited company to open either account." Not with HSBC, which accepts sole traders, partnerships and LLPs alongside limited companies. Tide is narrower: only sole traders, freelancers and directors of UK limited companies are eligible, and partnerships and LLPs cannot apply.

"A digital challenger account can't offer an overdraft, so none of them does." True for Tide specifically, which offers no overdraft on any plan. It isn't true of digital banking generally, since some challengers do offer lending, so it's worth checking per provider rather than assuming.

What Real Customers Say About Tide and HSBC

Tide holds a Trustpilot rating of around 4.4 out of 5 from close to 37,000 reviews as of August 2026. Positive reviews consistently mention how quickly accounts open and how straightforward the app is to use day-to-day. Less positive reviews describe slower support response times and, in some cases, account restrictions triggered during compliance checks, a pattern common across app-based business accounts generally rather than unique to Tide.

HSBC's business banking Trustpilot profile sits at around 4.8 out of 5 from roughly 4,000 reviews as of mid-2026. Recurring praise centres on named business specialists and relationship managers who handle switches, overdraft applications and account changes personally. A smaller number of reviews describe frustration during the migration from Kinetic to the Small Business Banking Account, which is worth bearing in mind if you're an existing Kinetic customer rather than a new applicant.

Who Should Consider Tide?

Tide may be a good fit if your business:

  • Is a sole trader, freelancer, or a limited company with a director who wants to apply personally

  • Wants invoicing and accounting integrations included without paying for separate software

  • Makes a modest number of transfers a month, or is happy to upgrade plans once volume grows

  • Doesn't need an overdraft, branch access, or in-person banking support

  • Wants to keep monthly costs as close to zero as possible

If pricing flexibility across tiers is your priority, our Tide vs Monzo comparison and our Countingup vs Tide comparison look at how Tide stacks up against two other admin-focused digital providers.

Who Should Consider HSBC?

HSBC may be the better fit if your business:

  • Is a partnership or LLP, since Tide doesn't accept either structure

  • Wants the option of an overdraft or lending facility up to £100,000 without switching banks later

  • Handles cash regularly and wants branch or Post Office access built into day-to-day banking

  • Would rather have a named business specialist to call than manage everything through an app

  • Doesn't need built-in invoicing, since HSBC's core account doesn't include one

If international payments matter more than domestic branch access, our Tide vs Wise comparison is worth a look, since HSBC's core Small Business Banking Account doesn't bundle multi-currency functionality the way a specialist provider does.

FAQs About Tide and HSBC

Is HSBC Kinetic still available?

No. HSBC Kinetic closed to new applications on 2 April 2026 and stopped operating on 1 July 2026. New customers apply for HSBC's Small Business Banking Account instead.

Can partnerships and LLPs open a Tide account?

No. Tide is limited to sole traders, freelancers and directors of UK limited companies. HSBC's Small Business Banking Account is open to all legal entities, including partnerships and LLPs.

Are Tide and HSBC accounts FSCS protected?

Yes, both are, up to £120,000. HSBC is a fully licensed bank, so protection is direct. Tide isn't a bank itself, but new accounts hold funds with ClearBank, a licensed bank, which extends the same protection.

Does Tide or HSBC offer an overdraft?

HSBC does, up to £100,000 through the Small Business Banking Account, subject to application and credit checks. Tide offers no overdraft or lending facility on any plan.

Is HSBC or Tide cheaper?

It depends on usage. Tide's Free plan costs nothing but charges 20p per transfer after the first five each month. HSBC's Small Business Banking Account has no monthly fee and free standard digital transfers, but charges percentage-based fees on cash handling.

Does Tide or HSBC have invoicing included?

Tide includes invoicing on every plan, including the free tier. HSBC's Small Business Banking Account doesn't include a built-in invoicing tool.

Alternatives to Tide and HSBC

If cash handling is your main concern, our guide to business bank accounts for cash handling is worth checking alongside this comparison, and our switching guide covers how the Current Account Switch Service works if you're moving from an existing account.

Our Verdict: Tide or HSBC?

If your business is a sole trader, freelancer, or a limited company with a director who wants low-cost digital banking, built-in invoicing and no overdraft requirement, Tide is the stronger starting point. The Free plan genuinely costs nothing for a business making a modest number of transfers a month, and upgrading is straightforward as volume grows.

If your business is a partnership or LLP, expects to need borrowing beyond a basic account, or wants branch and Post Office access alongside a named business specialist, HSBC's Small Business Banking Account is the better fit, particularly given it charges no monthly fee at all for standard digital banking.

Neither is automatically right for a cash-heavy business without checking the numbers first. Tide charges a flat per-deposit fee through Post Office and PayPoint locations, while HSBC charges a percentage of value deposited, and which works out cheaper depends entirely on typical deposit size. Businesses that want Tide's invoicing and low running costs while keeping a lending relationship in reserve sometimes run a Tide account for day-to-day admin alongside a dormant or lightly used HSBC account, rather than treating the choice as either-or.
